This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Commercial Underwriter based in the United States.

Join a growing commercial insurance team where your underwriting expertise will directly contribute to portfolio performance, risk management, and profitable business growth. In this role, you will manage commercial insurance accounts of moderate to high complexity, evaluating risks and determining appropriate coverage for new business, renewals, and policy endorsements. You will build strong relationships with independent insurance agencies across Iowa while collaborating with sales, claims, and loss control teams. Beyond managing your territory, you will help develop agency partnerships, support colleagues through mentoring, and contribute to broader business initiatives. This fully remote opportunity combines analytical decision-making with field engagement, offering the flexibility to work from home while maintaining meaningful connections with agency partners and internal teams.

Accountabilities:

  • Underwrite new commercial insurance submissions, renewals, and endorsements for accounts with moderate to high complexity, applying sound risk assessment and coverage decisions.
  • Manage territory growth and profitability by evaluating business opportunities, monitoring portfolio performance, and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Analyze internal and external data, reports, and underwriting information to support informed decisions and effective risk selection.
  • Maintain clear, accurate, and comprehensive underwriting documentation in accordance with established standards.
  • Prepare territory performance reports and develop actionable plans to support business objectives and communicate results to leadership.
  • Collaborate with sales, claims, loss control, and independent agency partners to strengthen business relationships and deliver effective underwriting solutions.
  • Lead agency visits throughout Iowa, communicate product-line benefits, promote growth and incentive programs, and support agency-specific action plans.
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, best practices, rate plans, and assigned underwriting authority.
  • Mentor new associates and Underwriter I colleagues, contribute to training activities, and support team development.
  • Participate in committees and enterprise-wide initiatives that advance organizational goals.
  • Navigate disagreements constructively, address challenges collaboratively, and contribute to effective team solutions.
  • At least three years of experience in commercial multi-line underwriting.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to evaluate risks and make sound underwriting decisions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and the ability to interpret data and prepare performance reports.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with independent insurance agencies and internal stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor colleagues, support training, and contribute to team development.
  • Familiarity with underwriting systems and a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, maintain accurate documentation, and work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Preferred education: Bachelor's degree in Business, Insurance, or a related field.
  • Preferred training: Completion of a Certificate in General Insurance and an Associate in Underwriting program.
  • Willingness to travel within the Iowa territory for agency visits and occasionally to office locations for team meetings, training, or corporate events.
  • Annual salary range of $68,513–$96,505, depending on relevant knowledge, skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal equity.
  • Fully remote, work-from-home arrangement with field responsibilities across Iowa.
  • Medical and prescription insurance.
  • Health Savings Account (HSA).
  • Dental and vision insurance.
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs).
  • Life insurance and accidental death and disability coverage.

  • Employee Assistance Program.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Pet insurance.
  • Paid time off, with standard first-year PTO of 17 days, prorated based on the month of hire; enhanced PTO may be available for experienced candidates.
  • Eligibility for performance-based bonuses.
  • Equal employment opportunity and a commitment to a welcoming, inclusive workplace.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
