The posting

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Embedded Linux Engineer based in the United States.

The Embedded Linux Engineer will contribute to the development, modernization, and sustainment of mission-critical embedded networking and retransmission devices. This role offers hands-on involvement across the embedded software lifecycle, from Linux image creation and platform integration to networking services, device management, testing, and deployment. You will help maintain an existing OpenWrt-based solution while supporting its migration to next-generation ARM-based hardware and an evolving Linux architecture. Working with technologies such as Python, C/C++, Bash, Buildroot, and Linux networking tools, you will develop reliable, secure, and maintainable software. You will collaborate with software, hardware, systems engineering, cybersecurity, and quality assurance teams to deliver robust capabilities in a technically challenging environment. This fully remote, individual-contributor opportunity is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving complex integration problems and contributing to products that support critical operational missions.

Accountabilities:

  • Embedded Linux Development: Design, develop, integrate, debug, and maintain Linux-based software for embedded networking and retransmission devices throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Platform Sustainment and Modernization: Maintain and enhance an existing OpenWrt-based firmware solution, including Linux image configuration, custom packages, package feeds, system services, first-boot behavior, and device configuration.
  • Next-Generation Hardware Migration: Support the migration of existing device capabilities to next-generation ARM-based hardware and a Linux-based architecture, contributing to development tasks under established technical direction.
  • Linux Image Creation and Integration: Develop and maintain image-building, packaging, provisioning, deployment, update, and release workflows using embedded Linux build systems and related tools.
  • Low-Level Platform Integration: Assist with bootloader configuration, Linux kernel integration, board-support packages, cross-compilation, device trees, and embedded Linux image development.
  • Software Development and Automation: Build and maintain software, scripts, and automation tools using Python, Bash, C, C++, and other appropriate programming languages.
  • Networking and Device Management: Implement, maintain, and troubleshoot networking functionality, including interface configuration, routing, DNS, DHCP, firewalling, Wi-Fi, cellular or modem integration, and secure communications.
  • API and User Interface Development: Develop and maintain REST APIs, web-based configuration interfaces, and device-management capabilities that enable users to configure network settings and device behavior.
  • Testing and Quality Assurance: Create and maintain unit, integration, system, simulation, and hardware-connected tests to validate functionality, reliability, and performance across embedded platforms.
  • CI/CD and Release Engineering: Contribute to GitLab merge-request reviews, automated build and test pipelines, release processes, build validation, and reproducible-build practices.
  • Cybersecurity and Vulnerability Management: Support secure software development through vulnerability remediation, certificate management, authentication and authorization, software-update integrity, dependency management, and CVE analysis.
  • Documentation and Technical Collaboration: Maintain design specifications, build instructions, API documentation, test procedures, and operational guides while collaborating with hardware, systems, cybersecurity, quality assurance, and product teams.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify and resolve technical issues spanning embedded Linux, networking, device configuration, software integration, testing, and security, contributing to reliable and maintainable product capabilities.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Professional Experience: At least five years of relevant professional software development experience, including a minimum of five years developing, integrating, testing, or maintaining Linux-based systems.
  • Programming Skills: Demonstrated experience developing software with Python, Bash or shell scripting, and C or C++.
  • Linux Systems Expertise: Strong knowledge of Linux system configuration, debugging, networking, package management, and software deployment.
  • Hardware Platform Experience: Experience developing, integrating, and debugging software for ARM-based and/or Intel or x86-based devices.
  • Embedded Linux Technologies: Practical experience with embedded Linux distributions or build systems such as OpenWrt, Buildroot, Yocto, or equivalent technologies.
  • Build and Deployment Processes: Experience with cross-compilation, embedded Linux image creation, software packaging, and deployment to embedded targets.
  • Networking Knowledge: Experience configuring and troubleshooting Linux networking components, including interfaces, routing, DNS, DHCP, firewalls, and Wi-Fi.
  • API and Application Development: Experience developing or debugging REST APIs, device-management applications, or web-based configuration interfaces.
  • Version Control and Collaboration: Proficiency with Git and GitLab-based development workflows, including branching strategies, merge requests, and code reviews.
  • CI/CD Experience: At least two years of experience building, maintaining, or troubleshooting automated continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines.
  • Testing Expertise: Experience developing unit, integration, system, or hardware-in-the-loop tests for software running on Linux-based systems or embedded devices.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, accurate, and maintainable technical documentation.
  • Remote Collaboration: Ability to work independently and effectively with distributed, cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Experience with NXP i.MX8 platforms, ARM64/AArch64 architectures, U-Boot, Linux kernel configuration, device trees, boot flows, or board-support packages.
  • Experience migrating embedded Linux solutions to new hardware platforms or Linux distributions.
  • Familiarity with OpenWrt build systems, package feeds, package Makefiles, and custom package development.
  • Experience with AlmaLinux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), RPM/DNF, Kickstart, OSTree, SELinux, or RHEL Cockpit.
  • Experience developing Python or Flask applications, OpenAPI/Swagger-documented APIs, or embedded device-management interfaces.
  • Background in embedded networking products, routers, retransmission devices, cellular or modem integration, Wi-Fi, 802.1X, routing, or secure network configuration.
  • Experience with device provisioning, firmware installation, software update mechanisms, and field-device maintenance.
  • Knowledge of secure software development practices, certificate and PKI integration, vulnerability scanning, software bills of materials (SBOMs), CVE remediation, or tools such as Trivy.
  • Experience with containerized builds, simulated device environments, or hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD), mission-critical, tactical-edge, disconnected, or regulated embedded-device environments.
  • Annual Salary: $82,100–$172,400, with the final offer depending on geographic location, relevant experience, technical skills, education, certifications, and applicable contract requirements.
  • Work Arrangement: Fully remote position available to candidates across the United States.
  • Employment Type: Full-time, regular employment.
  • Flexible Time Off: Access to a flexible time-off benefit designed to support work-life balance.
  • Healthcare and Wellness: Comprehensive benefits options supporting employee health and well-being.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
