This role provides high-level operational support for complex production and cloud-based application environments supporting critical government systems. You will be responsible for maintaining system availability, resolving technical issues, and ensuring reliable day-to-day operations across infrastructure and applications. The position combines cloud engineering, systems administration, automation, monitoring, database support, security, and production troubleshooting. You will work directly with users and senior stakeholders while collaborating closely with development, operations, and security teams. The role also involves continuous improvement, infrastructure maintenance, documentation, and compliance with government security standards. You will contribute to stable, secure, and resilient production environments while responding effectively to incidents and operational challenges. This is a fully remote opportunity for an experienced systems professional supporting mission-critical technology in a structured, high-accountability environment.
Accountabilities:
- Provide high-level, day-to-day operational support for complex application and cloud systems, ensuring reliable and stable production operations.
- Troubleshoot system outages and operational issues by detecting, isolating, documenting, reporting, and resolving problems, including collecting diagnostic information, restoring services, and developing workarounds when necessary.
- Respond to user requests involving hardware and software issues, resolving problems directly or escalating them appropriately while maintaining clear communication with users and senior management.
- Maintain and install computing infrastructure, manage system assets, and support system administration activities including user management, permissions, monitoring, and configuration.
- Monitor system performance and reliability using appropriate cloud and infrastructure monitoring tools, identifying potential issues and implementing improvements before they affect production operations.
- Develop automation and configuration-management solutions using scripting and tools such as Python, Bash, PowerShell, Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or SaltStack.
- Support cloud infrastructure and Infrastructure as Code practices using AWS and/or Azure services and technologies such as CloudFormation.
- Work with databases including AWS RDS SQL Server and Oracle RDBMS/RDS, supporting SQL queries, monitoring, performance tuning, backup, and recovery activities.
- Support CI/CD processes and version-controlled deployments using technologies such as Git, GitHub Actions, AWS CodeBuild, and AWS CodeDeploy.
- Implement and maintain security controls, support audits, and ensure production systems comply with applicable security standards and government requirements.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation covering system configurations, operational procedures, troubleshooting processes, and other production support activities.
- Maintain system inventory and ensure compliance with applicable VA standards and security policies.
- Drive continuous improvement through technology, automation, and operational process enhancements while contributing to multiple projects and initiatives.
- Collaborate with development, operations, security, and other cross-functional teams to ensure seamless production system operations.
- Participate in an on-call rotation to provide production support when required, prioritizing incidents and managing response activities effectively.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- 8+ years of experience in systems engineering or a related field, particularly supporting production environments.
- 3+ years of experience with SQL queries and monitoring.
- Strong experience with AWS and/or Azure Cloud, including services such as S3, Step Functions, Batch Jobs, and CloudWatch.
- Strong proficiency with Linux/Unix and Windows operating systems, including system administration, user management, permissions, and monitoring.
- Experience with scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation and configuration management.
- Experience with automation and configuration-management tools such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or SaltStack.
- Knowledge of cloud-native technologies and Infrastructure as Code, including CloudFormation.
- Experience with monitoring and diagnostic tools such as Dynatrace, ScienceLogic, and CloudWatch.
- Strong troubleshooting and performance-optimization skills, with the ability to diagnose complex production issues and improve system reliability.
- Understanding of networking concepts, network protocols, firewall configurations, VPN setup, and network monitoring tools.
- Experience implementing secure production-system practices, security controls, audits, and compliance measures.
- Working knowledge of AWS RDS SQL Server and Oracle RDBMS/RDS, including database performance, backup, and recovery.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and experience with Git, GitHub Actions, AWS CodeBuild, and AWS CodeDeploy.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical teams.
- Ability to prioritize competing tasks, manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail in a high-pressure production environment.
- Ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and processes and contribute effectively to multiple projects.
- Willingness to participate in an on-call production support rotation.
- Experience with Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) X.12 medical claims, including formats such as 837, 834, and 277, is desired.
- Advanced certifications such as Red Hat Certified Engineer, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, or AWS Certified Solutions Architect are desirable.
- U.S. citizenship is required for this opportunity.
- Must possess or be eligible to obtain a Public Trust (MBI) security clearance.
- This is a 100% U.S.-based remote W-2 position. Candidates residing in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, or Washington are not eligible for this opportunity.
- $85,389–$116,975 annual salary.
