The posting
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer based in the United States.
Join a high-impact hardware engineering team shaping the next generation of advanced additive manufacturing technology. In this senior technical leadership role, you will define mechanical architectures, guide complex product development, and establish engineering standards that support precision, reliability, and scalability. You will work across systems, electrical, software, materials science, and product leadership to turn ambitious concepts into production-ready solutions. This role combines hands-on technical depth with strategic influence, architectural decision-making, and mentorship. You will help resolve complex engineering challenges, improve long-term product performance, and raise technical standards across the organization. The position is remote, with a home office based in North Carolina.
Accountabilities
- Lead hardware architecture: Own the high-level mechanical architecture for next-generation 3D printing platforms, emphasizing modularity, serviceability, precision, and long-term reliability.
- Drive cross-functional development: Coordinate with systems, electrical, software, and materials science teams to address technical risks and deliver complex products from concept through production.
- Establish engineering standards: Develop and promote best practices for design validation, reliability testing, design for manufacturing (DFM), and production quality.
- Shape long-term technical strategy: Partner with leadership and product management to translate product objectives into multi-year engineering roadmaps and execution plans.
- Improve system performance: Identify and resolve architectural weaknesses, technical debt, and design limitations to strengthen product reliability and lifecycle performance.
- Guide critical technical decisions: Influence design reviews, lead root cause analysis for significant hardware issues, and make data-driven recommendations on complex engineering trade-offs.
- Oversee manufacturing readiness: Support global pilot and production builds while working with manufacturing partners to ensure designs meet quality, cost, and scalability objectives.
- Mentor engineering talent: Coach senior and staff-level engineers, support the development of emerging technical leaders, and raise engineering standards across teams.
- Extensive engineering experience: At least 12 years of experience in mechanical or mechatronics product development, including a demonstrated track record of taking complex hardware from initial concept through mass production.
- Technical leadership: Proven experience defining hardware architecture, leading complex engineering initiatives, and mentoring senior or staff-level engineers.
- Advanced systems knowledge: Expert understanding of thermodynamics, structural dynamics, precision motion control, and engineering principles for high-tolerance systems.
- Manufacturing expertise: Significant experience working with Tier 1 joint development manufacturers (JDMs) and contract manufacturers (CMs), including global pilot builds and production launches.
- Engineering analysis: Ability to evaluate complex systems across tolerance stack-ups, safety, thermal performance, stress, fatigue, service life, manufacturability, failure modes, and cost.
- Design and quality methodologies: Advanced application of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T, ASME Y14.5), design failure mode and effects analysis (DFMEA), and statistical process control (SPC) in production hardware development.
- Materials expertise: Experience selecting and applying sheet metal, metals, plastics, and elastomers for demanding mechanical applications.
- Cross-functional communication: Ability to explain complex technical trade-offs clearly and present evidence-based recommendations to executive leadership and multidisciplinary teams.
- Mentorship mindset: Commitment to knowledge sharing, developing engineering talent, and fostering collaboration across the organization.
- Additional assets: Experience with software or firmware development for custom tools or automated test hardware; familiarity with optics, fluidics, or UV-curable resin systems; or a track record of patents and proprietary innovations in robotics, automation, or additive manufacturing.
- Annual salary: $167,600–$251,400 for candidates based in North Carolina, with a stated midpoint of $209,500. Compensation considers experience, work location, certifications, and relevant skills.
- Equity: Eligible employees may receive equity as part of the total rewards package.
- Comprehensive benefits: A benefits package is available to eligible employees; specific healthcare coverage and plan details were not provided in the job listing.
- Time off: Time-off programs are included in the total rewards package; specific allowances were not specified.
- Remote work: Remote position based from a home office in North Carolina.
- Technical impact and career growth: Opportunity to influence hardware architecture, long-term engineering strategy, manufacturing excellence, and the development of senior technical talent.
