This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Sr. Developer – Application Development JAVA N 4B based in Canada.

We are seeking an experienced Java Developer to design, develop, and modernize mission-critical applications supporting sanctions and adverse media screening. In this role, you will contribute to new initiatives and enhancements across a complex application ecosystem, helping deliver secure, scalable, and high-performance solutions. You will work with modern Java technologies, microservices, messaging platforms, and database systems to process millions of customer and real-time transactions daily, with responses required in under a second. Collaborating with global teams in an Agile environment, you will take ownership of technical design, implementation, testing, and deployment. This opportunity is ideal for a hands-on technologist who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges, improving software architecture, and delivering reliable solutions in the financial risk and compliance domain.

Accountabilities

  • Application Development: Design, develop, test, and deploy Java-based applications for existing and new initiatives within sanctions and adverse media screening systems.
  • System Modernization: Deliver application customizations to meet evolving business requirements while improving architecture, infrastructure, scalability, and maintainability through iterative modernization.
  • High-Performance Transaction Processing: Build and optimize solutions capable of handling millions of customer and real-time transactions daily while meeting sub-second response requirements.
  • Backend Engineering & Integration: Develop RESTful services using JSON and work with technologies such as Spring Boot, Apache Kafka, IBM MQ, SOAP, XML, and other Java-based integration frameworks.
  • Database Design & Optimization: Design and maintain robust database structures, write SQL queries and stored procedures, and perform query tuning to improve application performance and data reliability.
  • Architecture & Technical Documentation: Apply object-oriented and functional programming principles, microservices concepts, service-oriented architecture (SOA), and software design best practices. Prepare architecture design review documentation and contribute to technical decision-making.
  • Agile Development & DevOps: Participate in Agile development processes, including Scrum, test-driven development, continuous integration, and continuous delivery. Apply DevOps practices to support reliable software delivery and ongoing improvements.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work effectively with global development teams and stakeholders to understand complex business use cases, evaluate requirements, and deliver appropriate technical solutions.
  • Production Support & Continuous Improvement: Use sound technical judgment to identify issues, improve system reliability, and leverage team expertise to support application success.
  • Technical Innovation: Evaluate vendor platforms and open-source technologies, including Actimize Case Management and LexisNexis CLINK and ASM, to support application functionality and ecosystem improvements.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline. A master's degree in Software Engineering is also relevant.
  • Java Development Experience: Strong hands-on experience developing enterprise applications using Core Java, Spring Boot, and relational databases.
  • API & Messaging Technologies: Practical knowledge of REST services, JSON, Apache Kafka, IBM MQ, SOAP, and XML.
  • Database Expertise: Strong database design and development skills, including SQL, stored procedures, query optimization, and performance tuning.
  • Software Architecture: Understanding of object-oriented and functional programming, microservices, service-oriented architecture, and high-quality software design methodologies.
  • Agile & DevOps Practices: Experience with Agile methodologies and familiarity with Scrum, test-driven development, continuous integration, continuous delivery, and DevOps tools and practices.
  • Operating Systems & Scripting: Working knowledge of Linux environments and shell scripting.
  • Communication Skills: Proficient English communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to collaborate effectively across global teams and explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Professional Attributes: Strong analytical thinking, sound judgment, adaptability, initiative, teamwork, interpersonal skills, and a proactive approach to solving complex technical challenges.
  • Preferred Technical Skills: Experience with Angular UI development is an advantage.
  • Preferred Domain Knowledge: Familiarity with financial services, anti-money laundering (AML), sanctions screening, adverse media screening, customer risk ranking, or quantitative risk assessment methodologies is beneficial.
  • Certifications: An Oracle Certified Java Associate certification is relevant.
  • Additional Competencies: Collaboration, design thinking, client relationship management, personal effectiveness, storytelling, and the ability to communicate confidently with technical and business stakeholders.
  • Salary Range: CAD $40,000–$75,000, as stated in the job posting.
