Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Member of Technical Staff (MTS), Applications Engineering – Product Definition to drive system-level product definition and new product development for onsemi’s SiC JFET (SJD) portfolio.

This senior technical role will bridge customer applications, system requirements, device technology, and new product development. The successful candidate will identify emerging application requirements, translate system-level needs into actionable semiconductor product requirements, and work closely with Applications Engineering, Product Marketing, Product Engineering, Technology Development, Design, Packaging, and Quality teams to define differentiated next-generation SJD products.

The role will have particular emphasis on applications where efficiency, power density, robustness, reliability, and protection capability are critical. Experience in circuit protection, automotive power electronics, or automotive electrical/electronic systems is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

Product Definition & Technology Roadmap

  • Lead application-driven definition of next-generation SiC JFET products and solutions
  • Drive clear differentiation and product value propositions based on application and system-level benefits.
  • Translate customer and system requirements into device-level specifications and product requirements, including voltage/current ratings, RDS(on), switching behavior, SOA, short-circuit capability, avalanche capability, thermal performance, reliability, package requirements, and other application-critical parameters.
  • Identify product and technology gaps through customer feedback, system analysis, competitive benchmarking, and emerging application trends.
  • Support SJD technology and product roadmap decisions

New Product Development

  • Serve as the Applications Engineering technical lead/product definer for SJD NPD programs from concept through product release.
  • Define application requirements, application validation plans, characterization requirements, use conditions, and product success criteria.
  • Provide system/application input to product requirement documents, technical specifications, success criteria, datasheets, validation plans, and NPD technical reviews.
  • Participate actively in NPD design and gate reviews, identifying application risks and ensuring appropriate validation prior to product release.
  • Work cross-functionally to resolve gaps between customer/application requirements and device capabilities.

Application & System Engineering

  • Lead system-level analysis to understand how SJD device characteristics affect efficiency, power density, reliability, protection, thermal performance, and overall system design.
  • Define representative application test conditions and validation platforms.
  • Guide characterization in areas such as switching performance, SOA, short-circuit robustness, avalanche capability, thermal behavior, dynamic operation, and application-specific stress conditions.
  • Establish meaningful competitive benchmarks connecting device characteristics to actual system performance.
  • Support development of reference designs, evaluation platforms, application notes, technical presentations, publications, and other technical collateral where needed to demonstrate product value.

Customer & Market Engagement

  • Engage with strategic customers, FAEs, marketing, and business teams to understand current and future system requirements.
  • Convert customer problems and application trends into new product concepts and measurable engineering requirements.
  • Provide technically authoritative support during early product engagement and adoption.
  • Represent SJD Applications Engineering in customer technical discussions, design reviews, and internal product-definition forums.

Technical Leadership

  • Act as a senior technical authority for SJD applications and product definition.
  • Mentor junior application engineers in system analysis, product definition, characterization, and NPD execution.
  • Establish best practices for translating application requirements into device specifications and validation criteria.
  • Influence cross-functional teams through technical expertise and data-driven recommendations.
  • Build technical knowledge across the organization through training, application documentation, and technical publications.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Semiconductor Engineering, or a closely related discipline; PhD is a plus.
  • Extensive industry experience in power semiconductor applications, power electronics, or semiconductor product development.
  • Strong understanding of power semiconductor device behavior and its interaction with system-level performance.
  • Demonstrated experience translating system/application requirements into semiconductor product specifications.
  • Strong knowledge of power conversion topologies, switching behavior, thermal design, device characterization, and reliability considerations.
  • Experience supporting or leading new product definition and NPD activities.
  • Ability to work effectively across Applications, Product Marketing, Product Engineering, Device/Technology Development, Design, Packaging, Quality, and customer-facing organizations.
  • Strong technical communication skills with the ability to influence both engineering teams and senior stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in circuit-protection applications and architectures is highly preferred, including solid-state circuit breakers, eFuse/hot-swap, electronic protection, high-current switching, fault interruption, or related protection functions.
  • Experience in automotive power electronics or automotive electrical/electronic systems is highly preferred, particularly applications requiring high reliability, robustness, functional protection, or high-voltage power semiconductor solutions.
  • Experience with SiC JFET, SiC MOSFET, silicon MOSFET, IGBT, or other wide-bandgap power semiconductor technologies.
  • Experience with high-voltage DC power distribution, AI/data-center power, industrial power conversion, energy infrastructure, or other high-power-density applications.
  • Hands-on experience with device characterization, switching evaluation, SOA, short-circuit testing, avalanche testing, thermal characterization, and system-level validation.
  • Experience developing technical requirements for new semiconductor products and supporting products from concept through qualification and release.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
