About the Position

Our client is seeking an experienced General Superintendent to provide leadership and oversight across its commercial concrete construction operations in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Reporting directly to the President, the General Superintendent will oversee field operations, manpower planning, subcontractor performance, production, quality control, scheduling, and jobsite execution across the company's active projects.

This is a key leadership position for a construction professional who can balance field execution with project financial performance while developing strong relationships with Project Managers, Superintendents, field employees, subcontractors, clients, and other project stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and coordinate field labor and construction operations across multiple commercial concrete projects.
  • Develop and manage weekly manpower requirements, including company personnel and subcontract labor.
  • Evaluate field employee and subcontractor performance and address performance, productivity, or quality issues as needed.
  • Monitor project schedules, field production, labor costs, and jobsite impacts to ensure projects remain on schedule and financially successful.
  • Conduct weekly project production and performance reviews with Project Managers and Superintendents.
  • Coordinate closely with Project Managers to identify potential issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Provide oversight of installation details and quality assurance throughout all phases of construction.
  • Establish and maintain consistent quality control standards for company and subcontractor work.
  • Provide leadership, direction, coaching, and constructive feedback to field personnel.
  • Help plan and coordinate short- and long-term manpower and operational requirements.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture and ensure field operations follow applicable safety standards and company expectations.
  • Build productive relationships with clients, subcontractors, vendors, employees, and community stakeholders.
  • Represent the company professionally and positively in the field and within the community.
  • Identify opportunities to improve productivity, processes, communication, and overall project performance.
  • Support the company’s mission, vision, and values in all interactions and decisions.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of commercial construction experience, preferably with significant commercial concrete experience.
  • Proven experience in a General Superintendent, Senior Superintendent, Superintendent, or comparable field leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of commercial building construction materials, methods, tools, sequencing, and costs.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage field operations across multiple projects.
  • Experience coordinating manpower, subcontractors, schedules, production, and quality control.
  • Strong understanding of construction scheduling, labor productivity, and project cost management.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, specifications, and installation details.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills, including the ability to evaluate production and labor performance.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Project.
  • Experience with On-Screen Takeoff (OST) and Quick Bid required.
  • Strong communication and active listening skills, with the ability to work effectively with field teams, project management, clients, and subcontractors.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to provide clear direction, motivate teams, establish accountability, and influence performance.
  • Strong planning, organization, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
