The posting

Klarna, briefly At Klarna, we’re building an everyday finance network, helping over 120 million consumers across 26 countries save time and money, and worry less about their finances. Working here means taking on problems most companies never get to solve, and being hands-on enough that the interesting part of the work lands with you, not someone else — you’ll build with AI, not watch it happen.

This is the stretch zone. Come find out what you’re capable of.

About the role

On any given week, Klarna’s Australian business can send legal a licensing obligation, a merchant contract, a marketing question and an ASIC filing. This position is for the lawyer who picks up all of them. You’ll be a Legal Counsel in Klarna’s APAC legal team, based in Sydney or Melbourne and reporting to the Legal Director, APAC.

The mix of work shifts as the business does, so your focus in a year may look different from your focus on day one. Regulatory and licensing, commercial advice, contracting and company secretarial support are the four areas where most of the work sits today.

You’ll work with colleagues across legal, commercial, product, compliance and marketing, and with Klarna lawyers in other markets.

What you’ll do

  • You’ll support licensing and regulatory work for Klarna’s Australian and New Zealand businesses, including advice on obligations, regulatory change and information requests, and you’ll explain what a rule means in practice and what needs to change.
  • You’ll advise on day-to-day commercial questions, partnerships, marketing arrangements, subsidies and incentives, and the other matters the business brings to legal.
  • You’ll draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts, including merchant and partner agreements, vendor and services agreements, addenda and variations.
  • You’ll support global CoSec in keeping Klarna’s Australian entities in good standing by preparing and lodging ASIC forms and notifications, maintaining company registers and records, and supporting director and shareholder resolutions.
  • You’ll pick up the wider mix of work sitting with the APAC legal team, from market-launch questions to contract hygiene and one-off advice, and you’ll escalate early when something needs the Legal Director, APAC.

Who you are

  • You’re admitted as a lawyer in Australia.
  • You’ve spent at least 4 years post-qualification in a law firm or in-house, working in corporate commercial law; regulatory, consumer or financial services experience is a plus, but not a requirement.
  • You’re curious about how a regulated payments and shopping business actually runs, and that curiosity matters more to us than a perfect CV match.
  • You know the basics of corporate governance, or you’re ready to learn them quickly.
  • You pick up work outside the area you know best and see it through.
  • You know when to solve something yourself and when to take it to the Legal Director, APAC.
  • You explain a legal point to a non-lawyer in plain English, whether in a contract markup or a short note.

Things you should know before applying

  • This position can be based in Sydney or Melbourne.
  • You’ll report to the Legal Director, APAC, and sit in a global legal team that covers more than one market.
  • Working together: we value co-located teams; most teams currently meet in the office 2–3 days per week, and this varies by team and can change over time.
  • Non-obvious backgrounds are welcome. Diversity of skills, perspectives and backgrounds is how we create, innovate, and disrupt like no other.
  • Final compensation will be based on the candidate’s qualifications, skills, and experience.

Please include a CV in English. Concrete beats comprehensive — what you built, what it did, what it cost.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
