Job Description

The Opportunity

KPFF Consulting Engineers is seeking an experienced Project Surveyor to join our Los Angeles Survey team. This is a primarily office-based opportunity for a technically skilled survey professional who enjoys managing survey assignments, solving complex technical challenges, and collaborating with field crews and engineering teams.

Established in Los Angeles in 1968, KPFF has contributed to projects that shape communities throughout Southern California. Our Survey team provides land surveying and mapping services for projects of all sizes, working closely with KPFF's civil engineering teams as well as external clients. Our services include boundary and topographic surveys, ALTA/NSPS land title surveys, construction staking, aerial surveys, subdivision and parcel maps, condominium plans, vertical airspace maps, legal descriptions, and laser scanning.

As a Project Surveyor, you'll take ownership of the technical execution and coordination of surveying projects, working with project managers, field crews, and office staff to deliver accurate, high-quality work. You'll manage multiple assignments of varying scope and duration, from short-term projects to more complex, long-term engagements.

This position is well suited for an experienced survey professional who enjoys technical work, project ownership, and problem-solving, without necessarily taking on the broader client development and business management responsibilities of a Survey Project Manager.

This is a primarily office-based position, with occasional site visits as needed. Our Los Angeles team follows a hybrid schedule of three days in the office and two days working remotely following an initial training period. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are preferred in-office days, with flexibility in selecting the third day.

Where We Stand Out

  • Diverse Project Opportunities: Contribute to a broad range of surveying projects supporting civil engineering, infrastructure, development, and public agency clients throughout Southern California.
  • Technical Focus: Apply your surveying expertise to project execution, mapping, calculations, and technical problem-solving.
  • Project Ownership: Take responsibility for coordinating and delivering survey assignments while collaborating with experienced project managers and technical professionals.
  • Collaborative Environment: Work closely with field crews, office survey staff, and civil engineering teams to support successful project delivery.
  • Professional Growth: Access mentorship, specialized training programs, technical seminars, and opportunities to continue advancing your surveying expertise.
  • Work-Life Integration: Enjoy a supportive team environment, flexible work arrangements, and comprehensive benefits designed to support your professional and personal well-being.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate the technical execution of multiple surveying assignments, ensuring accurate and timely completion of project deliverables.
  • Perform survey research, calculations, boundary analysis, and technical evaluations to support surveying and mapping projects.
  • Prepare and review survey deliverables, including ALTA/NSPS surveys, subdivision and parcel maps, legal descriptions, construction staking calculations, condominium plans, and other mapping documents.
  • Analyze field survey data, boundary records, and supporting documentation to identify and resolve technical issues.
  • Coordinate with field survey crews to communicate project requirements, review collected data, and support the completion of survey tasks.
  • Work closely with Survey Project Managers to establish project priorities, monitor progress, and meet schedule and budget expectations.
  • Collaborate with KPFF's civil engineering teams to provide survey information and technical support for design and construction projects.
  • Perform quality reviews of survey calculations, drawings, and mapping documents to ensure accuracy and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Assist with planning and coordinating field activities, survey resources, and office production efforts.
  • Communicate with project managers, clients, and other stakeholders regarding technical information, deliverables, and project progress.
  • Exercise independent judgment in resolving technical surveying challenges and determining appropriate solutions.
  • Visit project sites as needed to inspect existing conditions, coordinate with field personnel, or address project-specific technical needs.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Significant professional experience in land surveying, ideally approximately 10 or more years, with demonstrated ability to independently coordinate and execute survey projects.
  • Strong technical knowledge of boundary surveying, topographic surveying, construction staking, mapping, and related land surveying practices.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing survey calculations, field data, mapping documents, and technical deliverables.
  • Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) software used in surveying and mapping.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments, prioritize deadlines, and maintain accuracy across competing project demands.
  • Experience coordinating with field crews, project managers, and other technical professionals.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative, multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active California Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license.
  • Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) certification with substantial relevant project experience.
  • Experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D for survey production and project delivery.
  • Experience with Trimble Business Center (TBC).
  • Experience preparing complex survey maps, legal descriptions, and other technical surveying deliverables.
  • Experience supporting civil engineering design projects and working with public agency or private development clients.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
