About R37
R37 is R1’s AI innovation lab, building technology to transform healthcare. Our flagship platform, Phare OS, uses AI and automation to improve critical pre-bill workflows, including authorization, utilization management, documentation and coding. By identifying and resolving issues before claims are submitted, Phare OS helps prevent denials, improve reimbursement and move revenue cycle work upstream.
What makes R37 different is the opportunity to build advanced AI at real-world scale. R1 works across 95 of the top 100 U.S. health systems, giving R37 access to the data, workflows and reach needed to make an immediate impact:
- 180M+ claims
- 550M+ patient encounters
- 1.2B+ workflow actions and outcomes annually
This is startup-level ownership with enterprise-level impact. You’ll build technology that moves from idea to real healthcare environments, solving complex problems at scale and changing how healthcare works.
As our Software Engineer II, you will design, build, and maintain high-quality solutions across our suite of SaaS healthcare applications and services. This is an AI-first engineering role in which you will deliver working software by directing, reviewing, and refining output from AI coding agents rather than writing most code by hand.
Every day you will translate requirements into clear specifications for AI agents, rigorously review generated code, and collaborate with senior engineers to deliver secure, resilient, and production-ready applications. To thrive in this role, you must be a thoughtful engineer who can provide precise technical direction, evaluate AI-generated output critically, and take full ownership of every solution you help deliver.
Here’s what you will experience working as a Software Engineer II:
- Use AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools to implement features, resolve defects, write tests, produce documentation, and safely modify unfamiliar code.
- Translate user stories and functional requirements into well-scoped tasks, prompts, specifications, acceptance criteria, and technical design documentation that AI agents can execute reliably.
- Review AI-generated code for correctness, security, performance, quality, and adherence to engineering standards, taking full ownership of all changes released to production.
- Collaborate with senior engineers, architects, and cross-functional partners to design, build, troubleshoot, and maintain secure, scalable, and reliable healthcare applications.
- Apply modern software development practices, including CI/CD, automation, auditability, automated testing, infrastructure and policy as code, while protecting PHI and other sensitive information through approved AI tools and company policies.
Required Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, with 1–3 years of software engineering experience that includes hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools.
- Demonstrated experience using AI coding agents or assistants, such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools, to build working software through professional, academic, or substantial personal projects.
- Ability to write clear, precise instructions and technical specifications, with an understanding of how context, examples, constraints, and acceptance criteria influence agent output.
- Strong code-reading and code-review skills, including the ability to assess generated code for correctness, security, performance, safety, and adherence to established standards.
- Understanding of object-oriented programming in languages such as C#, Java, or TypeScript, along with modern software development practices including version control, unit testing, continuous integration, and Agile development.
