The Manager Internal Audit serves as the company's independent assurance and risk assessment function, responsible for evaluating internal controls, financial integrity, operational efficiency, and compliance with corporate policies and other standards. Operating within a private equity-owned, growth-oriented waste and recycling company, this role requires a pragmatic operator who can balance precision auditing with strategic foresight to enhance enterprise value, safeguard assets, and support transparent governance.

Reports to:

Chief Legal Officer (dotted line to Chief Financial Officer)

Essential Job Duties:

  • Design and execute the annual internal audit plan aligned with enterprise risk priorities and board directives.
  • Conduct cross-functional, end-to-end audits identifying control weaknesses, process inefficiencies, and risk exposures.
  • Partner with the CFO and finance leadership to evaluate accounting processes, reporting accuracy, and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and company policies.
  • Monitor risk mitigation plans and verify timely remediation of identified issues.
  • Report independently to the Risk, Audit & Finance Committee on audit results, internal control health, and material findings.
  • Maintain clear, data-driven communication channels with the Chief Legal Officer, CFO, and the Risk, Audit & Finance Committee Chair.
  • Support quarterly and annual risk updates for private equity sponsors and board materials.
  • Evaluate and enhance internal control frameworks.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate policies, ethical standards, and relevant environmental, safety, and financial regulations.
  • Leverage internal data sets and technology to assess areas of control weakness, test key controls, and deliver value creation insights.
  • Coordinate with external auditors, providing independent testing support while maintaining audit objectivity.
  • Serve as an internal advisor to management on control design, operational risk, and governance maturity.
  • Provide pragmatic recommendations focused on process improvement, cost efficiency, and risk mitigation.
  • Stay ahead of evolving regulatory and environmental standards impacting the waste and recycling sector.

Scope of Responsibility:

This is a hands-on individual contributor role with enterprise-wide visibility and no direct reports, authorized to coordinate with management and external advisors to maintain an effective control environment. The role reports independently to the Risk, Audit & Finance Committee, with a direct reporting line to the Chief Legal Officer and dotted-line reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and Committee Chair.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Strong analytical, communication, and presentation skills, with board-level reporting experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate autonomously in complex, matrixed, and private equity-owned environments.
  • Comfort navigating between legal, financial, and operational stakeholders (preferred).
  • Exposure to systems and controls optimization in a mid-market company scaling toward institutional maturity (preferred).
  • Integrity and Independence: Uncompromising ethics with the courage to challenge assumptions.
  • Execution Discipline: Drives audits from planning through follow-up without bureaucracy.
  • Strategic Acumen: Sees beyond compliance to identify business risk trends and efficiency opportunities.
  • Collaboration: Works cross-functionally with finance, operations, and legal teams to drive ownership of control improvement.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in internal audit, public accounting, or risk management, preferably within industrial services, logistics, or environmental sectors.
  • Prior experience in waste management, recycling, or environmental services industries preferred.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Regularly required to talk and hear, both in person and by phone or web meetings.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to read and interpret data on a computer screen or printed documents.
  • Work is performed in a typical office environment with moderate noise levels, in a climate-controlled environment with heating and air conditioning.
  • Potential for remote work or hybrid work arrangement.
  • May be required to lift up to 30 pounds.

Travel Required:

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
