About LanzaTech
At LanzaTech, we’re turning waste carbon into new beginnings.
Using our proprietary bio-fermentation technology, we transform industrial emissions, carbon dioxide, and gasified waste into ethanol—a building block for a wide range of sustainable products, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and other critical chemical derivatives.
With six commercial facilities already in operation and more on the way, we’re scaling fast to meet the world’s growing demand for fuels and materials. Our technology helps industrial sectors by unlocking value from emissions that would otherwise go to waste.
Together with our partners, we’re building a circular carbon economy—where carbon is continuously reused, not released.
If you’re ready to make a meaningful impact on the future of industrial sustainability, we’d love to hear from you.
About the role
This role is based at the company’s Skokie Headquarters / R&D Center. The Instrumentation & Electrical Technician is responsible for hands-on maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, repair, and installation of process instrumentation and low-voltage electrical equipment supporting laboratory, pilot plant, facilities, and process development operations.
Reporting to the Facilities team, this position helps keep instruments, electrical components, alarms, shutdown devices, and supporting equipment safe, accurate, available, and reliable through preventive and corrective maintenance.
The successful candidate will be a practical, hands-on technician who works well with engineers, researchers, operations personnel, other maintenance resources, and EHS professionals in a changing R&D and light-industrial environment.
Key duties of the role
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical, and other process instruments used in laboratories, pilot plants, and facilities.
Calibrate, inspect, function-test, troubleshoot, repair, and replace transmitters, sensors, switches, control valves, actuators, solenoids, and associated field devices.
Troubleshoot instrument loops, signal wiring, junction boxes, power supplies, relays, contactors, heater controls, motor controls, VFDs, and other low-voltage electrical equipment.
Maintain and test gas detection, alarm, interlock, and emergency shutdown hardware in accordance with established procedures.
Build, wire, label, inspect, and modify control panels and field wiring using approved drawings, specifications, and safe work practices.
Install and maintain pneumatic tubing, regulators, valves, fittings, and small-bore gas-handling components, including Swagelok® or similar systems.
Respond to equipment problems, identify failed components, make safe repairs, and return equipment to service with minimal disruption.
Use work orders and maintenance schedules to plan and document preventive maintenance, calibration, repairs, parts used, and follow-up work.
Maintain spare parts, tools, calibration standards, drawings, manuals, and equipment records in an orderly and usable condition.
Support equipment installation, checkout, and minor modifications under the direction of engineering or operations; provide practical feedback on maintainability and reliability.
Coordinate with vendors and contractors for specialized service and verify that completed work meets site safety and technical requirements.
Follow electrical safety, lockout/tagout, PPE, and other site procedures, and participate in MOC, PHA, and incident investigations as requested.
Minimum qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent plus relevant trade, military, apprenticeship, or industrial maintenance training. An associate degree or technical certificate in instrumentation, electrical technology, electronics, mechatronics, or industrial maintenance is preferred but not required.
3+ years of hands-on instrumentation, electrical, electronics, or industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing, industrial, laboratory, pilot plant, utilities, or similar operating environment.
Practical experience troubleshooting and repairing field instruments, low-voltage electrical circuits, panels, and related equipment using drawings and test equipment.
Ability to work safely, document completed work, communicate equipment status, and collaborate with operations, engineering, and other technical personnel.
If this role interests you but you do not meet every qualification listed, we still encourage you to apply. Relevant skills and experience can be gained in many ways, and we will consider candidates whose background demonstrates the ability and willingness to succeed in the role.
Competencies & skills you will need
Hands-on troubleshooting of pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical, and safety instrumentation.
Calibration and loop-checking using multimeters, process calibrators, pressure sources, and other common diagnostic equipment.
Ability to read and work from electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, loop drawings, P&IDs, equipment manuals, and vendor instructions.
Experience wiring and troubleshooting low-voltage AC/DC circuits, control panels, power supplies, relays, contactors, motor starters, heater controls, and VFDs.
Experience with control valves, actuators, solenoid valves, regulators, pneumatic controls, tubing, and compressed-gas systems.
Ability to distinguish field-device, wiring, power, mechanical, and basic control-system faults and communicate findings clearly.
Working familiarity with PLC-controlled equipment
Sound mechanical aptitude and the ability to use hand tools, power tools, and electrical test equipment safely.
Organized work habits, accurate maintenance documentation, and the ability to prioritize planned work and equipment breakdowns.
Commitment to safety, reliability, quality, and practical continuous improvement.
Preferred qualifications
Experience maintaining instrumentation or electrical equipment in chemical processing, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, food, energy, industrial R&D, or manufacturing environments.
Hands-on experience with Swagelok® or similar tubing and fittings.
Experience with gas detection systems, safety interlocks, or emergency shutdown devices.
Familiarity with Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar PLC-based equipment from a maintenance and troubleshooting perspective.
Knowledge of intrinsically safe circuits, hazardous-area equipment, or applicable electrical codes.
Experience using a CMMS or maintaining calibration schedules, work orders, and spare-parts records.
ISA CCST, NCCER, electrical, instrumentation, or comparable trade certification.
OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour training.
Physical requirements
Ability to work in laboratory and pilot plant environments.
Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to work around process equipment, piping systems, and electrical panels.
Ability to climb ladders and work in elevated spaces as required.
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all safety requirements.
