The posting
A Site Supervisor for Mechanical & Welding Works is responsible for overseeing the physical fabrication, structural erection, high-pressure piping installation, and welding quality control on-site. While a general mechanical supervisor handles broad systems like HVAC and plumbing, this specific role focuses heavily on metallurgy, structural steel integrity, non-destructive testing (NDT), and welding procedure compliance.
The targeted job scope, daily responsibilities, and operational criteria for this specialized role include:
1. Core Job Scope & Technical Responsibilities Welding Execution & Quality Control (QC)
- Enforce compliance with strict Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and ensure all field welding aligns with approved drawings.
- Verify welder qualifications, ensuring every welder on the floor holds valid, up-to-date certifications (WPQR) for the specific materials and positions required.
- Oversee weld preparation, inspecting joint fit-ups, bevel angles, root gaps, and alignment before welding begins.
- Coordinate Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), scheduling Radiographic (RT), Ultrasonic (UT), Magnetic Particle (MT), and Dye Penetrant (PT) tests, and managing the weld repair log for any defects.
Mechanical Installation & Piping Fabrication
- Supervise heavy lifting and rigging operations for structural steel components, pressure vessels, and heavy machinery alignments.
- Direct piping fabrication, including spool fit-ups, flange management, gasket installations, and torque verification.
- Manage hydrotesting and pneumatic testing, preparing test loops, witnessing pressure holds, and securing official test pack sign offs.
Material & Consumable Control
- Control welding consumables, ensuring proper storage, baking, and holding of low-hydrogen electrodes and filler wires in heated ovens.
- Trace material heat numbers, ensuring full accountability and documentation for all structural plates, pipes, and fittings used. (where applicable)
Safety & Hot Work Management
- Enforce strict Hot Work Permits, ensuring fire blankets, gas detectors, and dedicated fire watch personnel are active at every welding station.
- Manage workspace hazards, covering ventilation in confined spaces, scaffolding safety for high-altitude welding, and flash protection for surrounding workers.
2. Hiring Requirements & Profile Blueprint Because this role directly impacts structural integrity and pressure containment, the profile requires technical literacy:
Attribute: Requirements & Specifications
Education: Diploma or Technical Certification in Mechanical, Metallurgy, or Welding Engineering.
Certifications: Strong advantage if holding - AWS-CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) or CSWIP 3.0 / CSWIP 3.1 credentials.
Experience: 2 to 4 years of direct site experience in oil & gas, petrochemical, process plants, marine/shipyard, or heavy structural steel projects.
Technical Knowledge: Deep familiarity with international codes (e.g., ASME B31.3 / Section IX, AWS D1.1, API 1104).
Blueprint Skills: Advanced ability to interpret P&IDs, isometric drawings, structural blueprints, and welding symbols.
