The Law Society of BC is seeking a temporary, full-time Officer in our Professional Regulation for a 9-month term. The Professional Regulation Officer works with the Professional Regulation Department in general and with the Chief Legal Officer (CLO) on special projects, initiatives, and oversees the office of the CLO. Additionally, they provide support to Staff Lawyer, Professional Regulation and Staff Lawyer, Alternative Processes Program and work closely with others within the department and the Law Society as a whole. This position also supervises the Professional Regulation Coordinator and Professional Regulation Assistant. The duties of the position include:
Working on departmental, Law Society and national projects and initiatives. Managing the processes for the Administrative Penalty Process, Alternative Discipline Process, Rule 10-4 files, and responses for s.87 requests. This includes opening/closing files, tracking and keeping information up-to-date, and drafting/reviewing correspondence and letters. Preparing memos for the CLO and Professional Regulation, Staff Lawyer. Conducting original LSIS and file research and analysis of data for the CLO on a wide variety of projects related to the Professional Regulation Department, including gathering information and data from various sources including other regulatory bodies. Performing statistical analysis relevant to special projects and as assigned by the CLO. Drafting guidelines and process checklists. Preparing reports to Benchers and other groups, including producing the yearly National Discipline Standards report for the Federation of Law Societies of Canada. Responding to inquiries from the public and legal profession. Providing training, supervision and direction to the Professional Regulation Coordinator in the handling of judicial applications and KC nominations. Supervision includes approving timesheets, conducting performance reviews, and providing feedback. Coordinating the Discipline Committee process, including preparing agendas, addendums, agenda summaries and orientation materials, scheduling, setting up and administering meetings, and communicating with committee members. Providing support to the Discipline Committee chair regarding administrative penalty disputes & orders. Assisting in the preparation of presentations, including for Benchers or external stakeholders. Working with the CLO in planning significant events such as the Discipline Administrators Conference and Professional Regulation Management team retreats and meetings. Additional duties as the CLO may require.
Qualifications
Completion of a recognized paralegal program or equivalent, or a university degree in a related field, and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience preferably in a legal or regulatory environment. Advanced legal research, writing and analytical skills. Demonstrated ability to handle and effectively prioritize a volume of work. Project management, policy development and legal experience are strong assets. Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills are essential along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team. Previous supervisory experience and experience in Professional Regulation an asset. Proficiency with computer programs including Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint and document/knowledge management systems.
The terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Law Society of BC and the Professional Employees Association apply to this position.
