The posting

The Law Society of BC is seeking a temporary, full-time, Paralegal for a nine-month term as part of the Intake & Early Resolution department. The Paralegal provides support for the staff liaison to the Complainants’ Review Committee (CRC) and is responsible for the coordination of the entire complaints review process. The Paralegal works independently and under the general supervision of the Director, Intake & Early Resolution and Practice Standards. The Paralegal must have a thorough understanding of the Legal Profession Act, Law Society Rules, and the Code of Professional Conduct for BC. The duties of the position include:              

Receiving, managing and scheduling all incoming complaint review requests, and preparing and sending correspondence to complainants and lawyers confirming the scheduling of reviews; Setting, preparing and posting CRC agendas to the Committee page on the Law Society website; Liaising with members of the CRC, preparing and presenting the CRC training manual and materials, and ensuring quorums on CRC panels; Attending all CRC meetings and keeping/preparing minutes of each meeting; Composing and sending reporting letters to complainants and lawyers after a review has taken place; Inputting CRC data and maintaining CRC records in the Law Society’s record management system; Maintaining and updating precedents for the Intake & Early Resolution (IER) department and the website; Compiling and maintaining CRC statistics; Preparing, under the supervision of the Director, Intake & Early Resolution and Practice Standards, referral opinions to the Discipline Committee and Practice Standards Committee; Assisting with special projects as required; Such other duties as the Director, Intake & Early Resolution and Practice Standards may require.

Qualifications

A paralegal degree (or equivalent) supplemented by at least 5 years of relevant experience, preferably in a legal or regulatory environment. Exceptional interpersonal, written and verbal communication, and analytical skills. Ability to exercise confidentiality, discretion, sound judgment as well as possessing critical thinking in ambiguous situations. Proficiency with computer software including: Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Adobe, and Outlook required. Knowledge of principles of administrative law, conflict resolution, or mediation skills is desirable.

The terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Law Society of BC and the Professional Employees Association apply to this position.
