The posting

The EQT Shock and Vibration Engineer shall join the Gibbs & Cox Survivability Team to directly support an Environment Qualification Test (EQT) Facility located at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Philadelphia, PA. The applicant must work well in a team environment and be willing to learn new skill sets for performing MIL-DTL-901 shock and MIL-STD-167 vibration testing of Navy equipment. A background in Mechanical Engineering is preferred. Experience with performing qualification testing is not required, as the applicant will be trained in all laboratory duties. The engineer will work directly with the test facility manager to support a backlog of shock and vibration testing that includes managing projects, writing test procedures, configuring test setups conducting shock and vibration tests and documenting results. The test facility will also provide guidance for mechanical test fixture design to support shock and vibration test capabilities. Although the position is dedicated to the NSWCPD contract, the candidate may also support the Survivability Department at Leidos Gibbs & Cox for future ship inspections, technical reviews and EQT related tasking.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Receive MIL-DTL-901E and MIL-STD-167-1A training to perform all aspects of shock and vibration testing at NSWCPD’s test lab.
  • Learn how to operate and maintain shock and vibration test vehicles including the Lightweight Shock Machine, Medium Weight Deck Simulating Shock Machine and the Vibration Table.
  • Create and review test procedures to support qualification testing.
  • Learn instrumentation techniques (accelerometers / displacement gages / voltage monitoring) and data acquisition systems.
  • Interact with the Navy Technical Warrant Holder for approvals.
  • Install equipment on test vehicles and simulate shipboard environment and operation.
  • Identify deficiencies and develop recommendations for solutions.
  • Develop, document and brief interdisciplinary teams and Navy Stakeholders on shock and vibration topics.
  • Create CDRLs associated with Shock and Vibration Testing, Qualification and Waivers.
  • Develop knowledge in the areas of survivability, focusing on vulnerability.
  • Support offsite EQT events at land-based test centers (system level), commercial test facilities (component level) or aboard Navy ships (sea trials).
  • Perform shipboard inspections to validate designs and proper installation of equipment.

Basic Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Electrical / Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline
  • 2 years or less of experience in a DOD related field (Component Level Design or EQT Testing for the U.S. Navy / other military applications)
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
  • Understanding of basic mechanical principles and concepts
  • Ability to work independently and with local / remote team members and customers
  • Willingness to learn new skills to become a subject matter expert
  • Ability to perform basic physical tasks, including lifting, carrying equipment (up to 20lbs), standing for extended periods, and operating simple equipment safely and efficiently
  • U.S. Citizen and must have or be able to obtain a US SECRET security clearance
  • Must be able to travel domestically and internationally up to 10% of time
  • Works well in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity interpreting and applying relevant military standards
  • Knowledge of Shock and Vibration Testing
  • Familiarity with vendors that provide commercial, or government furnished equipment for use aboard U.S. Navy ships
  • Intermediate knowledge of mechanical design or naval architecture
  • Strong technical writing and written / oral communication skills

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
