The posting

The SMIT-MCEN program for Leidos currently has an opening for a Network Routing Design Engineer Senior to work in Quantico, VA. This is an exciting opportunity to use your experience helping with the SMIT-MCEN mission. The Network Routing Design Engineer Senior will assist the Government Lead with daily network engineering activities, including the design, configuration, administration, troubleshooting, and optimization of enterprise Local Area Networks (LAN), Base Area Networks (BAN), and Wide Area Networks (WAN).

SMIT is the largest IT services program for the Navy. Under the Service Management, Integration, and Transport portion of NGEN-R, the Leidos team will deliver the core backbone of the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet, including cybersecurity services, network operations, service desk, and data transport. Ultimately, Leidos will support the Navy in unifying its shore-based networks and data management to improve capability and service while also saving significant dollars by focusing efforts under one enterprise network.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Design, develop, implement, and integrate enterprise network routing solutions utilizing Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), and Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF) technologies.
  • Design and implement network security solutions utilizing Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), Access Control Lists (ACLs), Internet Protocol Security (IPsec), Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks (L2 VPNs), and other approved network security technologies.
  • Evaluate network architecture, communication hardware, and software to develop scalable, secure, and resilient network solutions that support operational and mission requirements.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute network conversions, cutovers, upgrades, and migrations while minimizing service disruptions and maintaining operational continuity.
  • Perform Capacity and Demand Management activities in accordance with USMC Circuit Management processes, including network utilization assessments, traffic analysis, and traffic shaping design.
  • Develop, maintain, and manage Internet Protocol (IP) addressing schemes, network address allocations, and associated documentation to support enterprise network operations.
  • Design, configure, and optimize network services, including Domain Name System (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), and directory services replication.
  • Design and integrate secure web access solutions supporting Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS), including caching, proxy services, URL filtering, and content inspection.
  • Develop and implement proxy filtering solutions that support category-based filtering, policy scheduling, and automated filtering updates from Government-approved providers.
  • Design and integrate anti-malware, HTTP/HTTPS inspection, and other network security capabilities to strengthen enterprise cybersecurity protections.
  • Support the development and integration of Identity and Access Management (IAM) requirements, including Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), certificate-based authentication, and two-factor authentication for enterprise network resources.
  • Design and integrate network solutions supporting application ports, protocols, Information Assurance (IA) requirements, routing, and LAN connectivity.
  • Oversee Rights Management Services for administrators, users, and groups to ensure appropriate access controls and compliance with Government security policies.
  • Design, configure, and integrate multivendor network solutions utilizing Cisco, Juniper, Brocade, and other enterprise networking technologies.
  • Perform network performance assessments, configuration reviews, troubleshooting, and testing of complex, large-scale enterprise networks to identify and resolve operational issues.
  • Ensure network designs and implementations support Navy, Marine Corps, Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), and Joint interoperability requirements.
  • Monitor and implement applicable security updates, configuration changes, and network hardening requirements in accordance with Government policies and established cybersecurity standards.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, network diagrams, implementation plans, configuration baselines, and engineering recommendations to support network modernization and sustainment efforts.
  • Provide senior-level technical expertise and recommendations to Government stakeholders and engineering teams regarding network architecture, performance optimization, security, and operational improvements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Business, or a related field. Additional experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in enterprise network engineering, routing, design, implementation, and troubleshooting.
  • US Citizen with an active DoD Secret security clearance.
  • Must possess an Information Assurance Technician (IAT) Level III certification in accordance with applicable DoD requirements.
  • Must possess an Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Version 3 Foundation certification.
  • Must possess a professional-level certification in one or more networking technologies, such as Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Juniper Networks Certified Internet Professional (JNCIP), or equivalent. Demonstrated relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a professional-level vendor certification, subject to contract requirements.
  • Extensive experience designing, configuring, and troubleshooting enterprise routing protocols, including BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, and VRF.
  • Experience with network security technologies, including MPLS, ACLs, IPsec, and Layer 2 VPNs.
  • Hands-on experience with Cisco, Juniper, Brocade, or comparable enterprise networking equipment.
  • Strong understanding of DNS, DHCP, IP address management, HTTP/HTTPS, proxy services, and URL filtering.
  • Experience with performance analysis, capacity planning, traffic management, and optimization of large-scale enterprise networks.
  • Ability to develop technical documentation, evaluate network design alternatives, and communicate engineering recommendations to technical teams and Government stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
