About our Council

Forbes Shire Council sits on the banks of the Lachlan River in the heart of Central West NSW. Covering 4,717 square kilometres, the Shire is home to around 10,000 people across Forbes and the villages of Bedgerabong, Wirrinya, Corinella, Garema, Calarie and Ootha.

Positioned on the Newell Highway halfway between Brisbane and Melbourne, Forbes blends a rich heritage with a strong agricultural economy and a friendly country lifestyle. Council acknowledges the Wiradjuri People as the Traditional Custodians of the land. With around 210 staff and an annual budget of just under $80 million, Council is guided by its values of being Authentic, Connected, Decisive and Consistent.

The Position

Forbes Shire Council is seeking an experienced Manager Works to lead the delivery of its roads, drainage and civil works programs. This is a hands on leadership role at the heart of what the community sees every day, covering local and regional roads, stormwater drainage, kerb and gutter, pavements and footpaths, gravel pits, and the Forbes aerodrome and helipad.

Reporting to the Director Infrastructure and Works, you will lead a team of around 40 through two capable supervisors, Construction and Maintenance. Around half of your time will go into delivering the operational, maintenance and capital works programs, with the rest spent on forward planning, budgeting, contractor performance, and grant applications and acquittals.

You will look after close to 1,870 kilometres of roads and represent Council with Transport for NSW and the Central NSW Joint Organisation.

About You

Council is looking for an experienced, hands on works leader who combines strong civil construction knowledge with sound people, contract and project management skills. You will plan well and then deliver, keeping crews, contractors, budgets and grant milestones on track while building trust with the community and funding partners.

Ideally the successful candidate will possess:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Civil Project Management or a related discipline, or extensive equivalent experience
  • At least five years in a similar role leading complex technical works and teams
  • Ten years’ experience in civil construction, including the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges and drainage
  • Sound knowledge of current design standards and guidelines for civil construction and local roads
  • Proven project management skills, including cost estimation and control, quality assurance and contract management
  • Experience working with Transport for NSW and other State and Federal funding agencies
  • Current Class C driver’s licence and a satisfactory criminal record check

What's on offer?

Salary package to be negotiated based on skills and experience within a range of $127,705 to $166,016

This position offers benefits including:

  • Nine day fortnight (35 hour week)
  • Superannuation @ 12%
  • Access to a leaseback motor vehicle
  • Relocation and temporary housing assistance
  • Laptop and mobile phone provided
  • Strong investment in learning and development
  • This is a chance to lead a big program of works that the Forbes community sees and uses every day, with a capable team behind you. If you take pride in getting good work done safely, on time and on budget, we would love to hear from you.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
