Job Description

Data Reporting Intern, Summer 2027

The San Francisco Chronicle is looking for a summer intern to join our Data team, which develops quick-turn, graphics-focused stories, interactive projects, and data-driven deep dives. This intern will receive training and mentoring but will also hit the ground running, covering a variety of stories from the office and in the field. There will be opportunities to pursue projects aimed at engaging our audience and to work closely with reporting teams throughout the newsroom.

The successful candidate will work quickly but responsibly on data stories that help readers understand and explore their communities through unique reporting, data analysis, and interactive graphics creation. This paid 12-week internship typically lasts from June to August 2027. Hourly rate: $20.50/hour.

What the Data Reporter Will Do:

  • Report and write graphics- and data-driven articles for our digital and print editions.
  • Conceive story ideas and work with editors and developers to enhance our storytelling.
  • Collaborate with newsroom reporters to produce unique, high-impact journalism.
  • Create assets to help promote and distribute the team's work.

What It Will Take to Be Successful:

  • Strong news judgment, creativity, and meticulous attention to detail.
  • A dedication to organization and documentation.
  • Desire and ability to learn on the job.
  • Ability to report stories, write, and build quickly while maintaining the highest standards of fairness and accuracy.
  • Ability to work with multiple, large datasets, preferably using Python, R, or similar programming languages.
  • Knowledge of current multimedia storytelling and a desire to experiment with new ways of engaging readers.
  • Ability to collaborate with all newsroom teams and thrive in a fast-changing news environment.
  • Willingness and ability to thoughtfully use AI tools to automate workflows and improve efficiency while applying sound editorial judgment and critical thinking.
  • Strongly preferred: Demonstrated experience in both data analysis and journalism.
  • Plus: Web development or data visualization experience.
  • Plus: Mapping or GIS skills.

Requirements:

This position will be full-time and based in the Bay Area for summer 2027. Weekend, evening, and holiday work may be required as news warrants.

Current undergraduate and graduate students, including community college students, as well as those who will have recently completed an associate's, bachelor's, or graduate degree, are encouraged to apply.

Please include in your application:

  • A resume or CV.
  • A cover letter of less than one page explaining why you are a good fit for this position. If you lack relevant experience in either data analysis or journalism, please use your cover letter to explain why you would still be a strong candidate for this internship.
  • Relevant clips, work samples, or a portfolio, if available.

Deadline to apply: October 10, 2026.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
