LMU is federally recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) and is recognized by the State of California as a Black-Serving Institution (BSI). Appointment Type and Details

The position is an Assistant Professor Tenure-Track faculty appointment. Applicants must hold an MFA in Production or a terminal degree in a closely related field along with a minimum of 5 years of professional experience as primary editor of fiction and/or non-fiction films and television, either short or long form, by the position start date of August 15, 2027.

Candidates must have at least 2 years of university-level teaching experience within the editing discipline and be able to teach courses that would readily fit into our Film and Television Production curriculum. Candidates who hold an Avid Instructor Certification are preferred.

Position Responsibilities

We seek a scholar with expertise in teaching and research in the discipline of Production whose work engages the following area: Editing and Postproduction. Experience in both the fiction and non-fiction forms is preferred.

We are looking for a socially conscious and engaged colleague who uses their work to make a difference in the world and understands the power of storytelling to shape the world we live in. We encourage applicants whose work addresses issues of cultural diversity and social justice and/or who have an orientation towards collaborative, inclusive filmmaking. We value diverse viewpoints and are looking for someone who brings a fresh perspective and a unique background to complement our existing team.

Successful candidates will be dedicated to 1) teaching a diverse student body in a transformative learning environment across a range of undergraduate and graduate courses, including introductory and advanced courses on the creative and technical aspects of storytelling through editing, high-end post-production workflows, integration of visual effects/compositing, as well as the process of finishing films for multiple distribution modes, 2) challenging themselves, their students, and their colleagues to be actively anti-racist and work towards building a school where every voice is heard, respected, and valued, and 3) participating in service activities at the academic, professional, and/or community levels.

Advanced skills in Avid Media Composer, Adobe Suite, and DaVinci Resolve are required. Skills in visual effects, generative AI editing tools, additional editing softwares, and emerging media forms are considered a plus. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate a deep understanding of assistant editing skills and technical knowledge of the entire postproduction process. To help fulfill the mission and objectives of the Production Department, the ideal candidate will be expected to help transition students into the entertainment industry and maintain a level of professional standing.

The selected candidate is expected to teach from among the following established courses at the graduate and undergraduate level: introductory post-production, intermediate and advanced editing courses, and MFA Editing Portfolio classes and to work with department colleagues to shape our future postproduction curriculum in this time of rapid technological change.

Faculty responsibilities include maintaining an active program of scholarship, teaching and advising undergraduate students, and contributing to department and university service. Department tenure-track faculty typically teach on a two-year 2-2-2-3 course rotation (4-unit classes) within a 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service model. Faculty in these positions will be encouraged to contribute to the LMU Core Curriculum, for example by developing a First-Year Seminar and/or courses that incorporate Interdisciplinary Connections.

The Department of Film and Television Production values collaborative, interdisciplinary, and community-engaged approaches to teaching and research. We seek candidates who are excited to teach and mentor a diverse student body in Los Angeles and who will contribute to LMU's teacher-scholar model through excellent undergraduate teaching, an active research agenda, and innovative forms of student engagement, including collaborative and community-based learning.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
