About the Opportunity

Lucky Rabbit LLC is seeking experienced Medical Coding Specialists to support anticipated healthcare coding services for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Northern California Health Care System.

We are building a strong candidate pool of professionals experienced in inpatient, outpatient, professional, surgical, and ambulatory medical coding. Opportunities are subject to contract requirements.

Prior VA or federal healthcare experience is highly preferred but is NOT required. Candidates with strong civilian hospital, health system, or medical coding experience are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review clinical documentation and electronic health records to assign accurate medical codes.
  • Perform inpatient, outpatient, surgical, and/or ambulatory coding based on demonstrated expertise.
  • Apply ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems, as appropriate to the assigned specialty.
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable coding guidelines.
  • Identify documentation deficiencies and coding discrepancies.
  • Support medical coding quality reviews, audits, and corrections.
  • Review and code medical services provided through community care and non-VA healthcare providers, as assigned.
  • Maintain accurate coding records while protecting confidential patient information.
  • Meet applicable productivity, quality, and turnaround standards.

Requirements

Qualifications

Required / Target Candidate Qualifications

  • Demonstrated professional experience in medical coding within a hospital, health system, medical practice, or comparable healthcare environment.
  • Hands-on professional medical coding experience in inpatient facility coding or outpatient/professional coding, or both.
  • At least 2 years of relevant professional medical coding experience.
  • Experience across multiple medical coding specialties.
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and applicable ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS, and E/M coding systems.
  • Experience reviewing clinical records and assigning appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records and healthcare documentation.
  • Completion of an accredited medical coding program.
  • Holds at least one active, nationally recognized medical coding or health information credential, preferably CPC, CCS, RHIT, or RHIA, or an equivalent credential such as CIC, COC, or CCS-P based on coding specialty and contract requirements.
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
  • US citizen.

Preferred Qualifications – Competitive Advantages

  • Experience supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), or another federal healthcare organization.
  • Familiarity with VA medical coding workflows, documentation practices, or electronic health record systems.
  • Prior experience coding complex inpatient, outpatient, or surgical cases.
  • Experience with coding audits, quality assurance, and compliance reviews.
  • Relevant professional coding certifications, such as CPC, CCS, CCA, CIC, COC, or RHIT/RHIA.
  • Associate degree in Health Information Management (HIM), Health Information Technology (HIT), or a related field.
  • Experience with surgical and ambulatory procedure coding.
  • Holds multiple medical coding certifications.

Important: VA experience is a bonus, not a prerequisite. We welcome experienced civilian healthcare coders who can demonstrate strong technical coding skills.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
