Job Description: Used Car Automotive Technician
Job Title: Used Car Automotive Technician Department: Service Reports To: Service Manager or Used Car Manager Employment Type: Full-Time
Position Summary
The Used Car Automotive Technician is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and reconditioning pre-owned vehicles to ensure they are safe, reliable, and ready for resale. This position works closely with the used car department and management team to identify necessary repairs, maintain quality standards, and prepare vehicles for retail sale in a timely and cost-effective manner.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform multi-point inspections on used vehicles and identify mechanical, electrical, and safety-related concerns.
- Diagnose and repair engine, transmission, suspension, steering, brake, cooling, and exhaust system issues.
- Perform routine maintenance, including oil changes, fluid checks, filter replacements, tire rotations, and battery testing.
- Inspect and repair electrical systems, lighting, starting and charging systems, and other vehicle components.
- Evaluate vehicle condition and recommend repairs needed to meet dealership safety and quality standards.
- Complete used vehicle reconditioning work orders accurately and efficiently.
- Conduct road tests and verify repairs have been completed properly.
- Identify additional repair needs and communicate findings to the service manager or used car manager.
- Help control reconditioning costs while maintaining high-quality repair standards.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Use diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment properly.
- Follow manufacturer recommendations, dealership procedures, and applicable safety regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, parts used, and labor performed.
- Work efficiently to meet inventory turnaround goals and prepare vehicles for sale on schedule.
Qualifications
- Previous automotive technician or mechanic experience preferred.
- Experience inspecting and reconditioning used vehicles is a plus.
- Knowledge of automotive systems, diagnostics, and repair procedures.
- Ability to use scan tools, diagnostic equipment, and standard automotive tools.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and time management.
- Ability to prioritize repairs and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- ASE certifications or equivalent technical training preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work in various positions for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry automotive parts and equipment as required.
- Ability to work safely around vehicles, lifts, tools, and shop machinery.
- Ability to work in a typical automotive shop environment.
Performance Expectations
- Complete vehicle inspections and assigned repairs accurately and efficiently.
- Maintain high standards of safety, workmanship, and repair quality.
- Minimize unnecessary parts and labor costs.
- Communicate repair needs and delays promptly to management.
- Help ensure used vehicles are mechanically sound and ready for retail delivery.
- Maintain productivity and meet established reconditioning deadlines.
Work Environment
This position operates in a dealership or automotive repair shop environment and involves working with a variety of makes, models, and vehicle conditions.
