The posting

Mallards Support Services Ltd (MSS) is a recently established company at the core of a group of philanthropically funded sustainability initiatives in the Isle of Man, including the ambitious Shuttleworth Botanic Garden and innovative regenerative farming practices.

These significant projects are being driven by South African - British technology entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth, who has been investing in their development on the Island for over a decade. 2025 marks a period of significant expansion, with a substantial increase in activity and a projected growth in our Isle of Man-based team to 20-30 individuals in the short term and beyond.

MSS will provide essential administrative and support services to all these vital projects on the Island. Furthermore, exciting opportunities may arise to extend our support to other initiatives funded by Mark Shuttleworth, particularly in São Tomé and Príncipe in Africa, offering a truly international dimension to our work.

This is a unique moment to join MSS at its inception and play a pivotal role in supporting high-quality, design-led projects from the ground up. At the time of writing in April 2025, we are planning to establish our office in Santon, Isle of Man.

The Opportunity:

This isn't your average role. We're seeking an experienced and passionate Architectural Technician who is ready to immerse themselves in a diverse range of high-quality, design-led projects. You will be a key player in our growing team, providing vital technical design and detailing expertise that will directly contribute to the success of these exciting ventures. These projects include the visionary Shuttleworth Botanic Garden with its unique architectural requirements, the design and development of our central administrative base, and the innovative infrastructure supporting our regenerative farming initiatives. This is your chance to make a tangible impact on projects that are not only aesthetically impressive but also contribute to a sustainable and vibrant future.

As our Experienced Architectural Technician, you will:

  • Be instrumental in translating design concepts into meticulously detailed architectural drawings, plans, elevations, sections, and specifications using cutting-edge CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit).
  • Take ownership of developing innovative technical details and solutions for a wide array of construction elements and materials across all project types.
  • Play a crucial role in the preparation of planning applications and building regulations submissions, ensuring our designs meet the highest standards.
  • Thrive in a collaborative environment, working closely with visionary architects, skilled engineers, dedicated contractors, and passionate stakeholders, including the botanical experts shaping the Shuttleworth Botanic Garden.
  • Experience projects firsthand through site visits and surveys, actively contributing to the smooth progression from concept to completion.
  • Uphold the highest standards of compliance with relevant building regulations, standards, and codes.
  • Maintain organized and accurate project documentation, contributing to efficient project management.
  • Have the opportunity to contribute to the implementation of BIM workflows (where applicable), embracing modern design technologies.
  • Utilise your technical acumen to assist in value engineering and cost control, ensuring projects are both beautiful and efficient.
  • Mentor and share your expertise with junior team members, fostering a culture of growth and learning.
  • Specifically, within the Shuttleworth Botanic Garden project, you will: contribute your technical expertise to the design and detailing of unique buildings and structures that harmonise with the natural environment and support the garden's vision.
  • Collaborate directly with botanical and horticultural teams, ensuring that the built environment seamlessly integrates with the landscape and the specific needs of the plant collections.
  • Apply your skills to the technical design aspects of the central administrative base, ensuring functionality and aesthetic quality.
  • Contribute to the detailing and construction documentation for infrastructure related to regenerative farming initiatives.

What You'll Bring:

  • A relevant qualification in Architectural Technology or equivalent (e.g., HND/Degree).
  • A proven track record of significant post-qualification experience as an Architectural Technician, demonstrating your ability to deliver high-quality technical design. We would ask for a minimum of 5 years’ experience.
  • Mastery of CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit) – experience with BIM will be a significant advantage.
  • A proactive approach to design evolution, constantly seeking to improve solutions based on lessons learned from previous projects.
  • A willingness to embrace and champion new products and design software is essential.
  • A comprehensive understanding of building regulations and planning processes, ensuring our projects are compliant and successful.
  • Exceptional technical detailing and problem-solving abilities, allowing you to translate complex designs into buildable solutions.
  • The ability to produce clear, accurate, and high-quality drawings and documentation that effectively communicate design intent.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to build strong working relationships within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • An unwavering eye for detail and a personal commitment to delivering excellence in every aspect of your work.
  • A full driving licence and the flexibility to travel to project sites across the Isle of Man.
  • A genuine interest in sustainable design principles and an appreciation for the beauty and importance of botanical and conservation environments would be a distinct advantage, particularly for your involvement in the Shuttleworth Botanic Garden.

What Awaits You:

  • A competitive salary that reflects your experience and the value you bring to our team.
  • A truly unique opportunity to be a key contributor to the landmark Shuttleworth Botanic Garden – a project with international aspirations and a profound environmental impact, backed by significant philanthropic investment – alongside the design of our administrative hub and innovative farming infrastructure.
  • A diverse and stimulating workload that will challenge and reward you, spanning a range of high-quality, design-led projects within a growing and innovative organisation (MSS).
  • Genuine opportunities for professional development and career growth within our expanding team, with potential exposure to international projects in the future.
  • A supportive and collaborative team environment where your contributions are valued and your ideas are heard, within a newly formed company with an exciting vision.
  • The chance to embrace the exceptional quality of life offered by the Isle of Man, with its stunning natural beauty and vibrant community, while being part of a significant and impactful initiative.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
