About Matter

Matter is building the first nutrition platform that pairs personalized nutrition intelligence with precisely tailored meals. Think of Matter as a personal nutritionist in your pocket (the app) speaking directly to your private chef (the restaurants). Our app learns each user's goals, preferences, and health data to provide meal recommendations based on their exact nutritional needs. By closing the loop between digital health signals and healthy food preparation, Matter makes precision nutrition as easy as ordering a meal.

The Matter app sits at the center of this experience: nutrition coaching, precision ordering, AI-enabled chat and photo logging, with engagement tools to track progress and inspire action. Wearable device and biomarker integrations support a reinforcement learning cycle to better guide each user and adapt to their evolving needs.

Role Overview

We're looking for a senior full-stack engineer to help build the Matter consumer app: our AI nutrition coach, tracking and personalization features, and the ordering experience that connects users to our restaurants. You'll ship across the app and the backend services that power it.

This role is for an engineer who is genuinely AI-forward. You use AI tools every day to write, review, test, and ship code faster, and you know how to build AI-powered features that hold up in production. You'll work on a small, high-velocity team and partner closely with product and design.

Core Responsibilities

Build the Consumer App

  • Ship features end to end across our React Native consumer app and the services behind it
  • Build the core app experience, including onboarding, tracking, progress, subscriptions, and in-app ordering
  • Design APIs, data models, and real-time features that scale with a growing subscriber base
  • Own app integrations with payments, notifications, and health data platforms

AI & Personalization

  • Build and improve LLM-powered features, including our AI nutrition coach, conversational and photo logging, and personalized recommendations
  • Design prompts, evaluations, and guardrails that make AI features accurate, fast, and safe for health-related use
  • Work with product to decide where AI genuinely improves the experience and where it doesn't

Engineering Velocity & Quality

  • Use AI coding tools and agents as a core part of your workflow, and help the team adopt practices that increase output without sacrificing quality
  • Improve CI/CD, testing, monitoring, and observability so we can ship fast with confidence
  • Write clean, well-structured code and give thoughtful code reviews
  • Take ownership of production systems, including debugging, incident response, and performance

What We're Looking For

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant full-stack work
  • Deeply AI-forward: uses AI coding tools and agents daily, with clear examples of how they've made you and your team faster
  • Experience shipping LLM-powered features to production, with a practical understanding of prompting, evals, latency, and cost
  • Personally passionate about health, wellness, and fitness, with hands-on experience using macro tracking apps
  • Strong TypeScript skills across React Native frontends and Node backends
  • Solid experience with relational databases, data modeling, and backend architecture
  • Track record of shipping and maintaining high-quality consumer mobile apps
  • Comfortable owning production infrastructure, deployments, and monitoring
  • Experience with subscriptions, payments, or in-app commerce is a plus
  • Experience with health data integrations (Apple Health, wearables, biomarkers) is a plus
  • Strong product sense and care for the end user experience
  • Comfortable in ambiguity, with a bias toward shipping over planning
