Job Description
Medical Oncology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join the Breast Oncology Care Team in a highly collaborative, academically rich outpatient practice. This is an exciting opportunity to practice at the top of scope while caring for patients with breast cancer across the full continuum of disease and treatment.
The NP or PA will be an integral member of the adult Medical Oncology outpatient practice, partnering closely with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, allied health colleagues, and multidisciplinary specialists to deliver innovative, patient-centered breast cancer care.
NPs and PAs are essential providers in cancer care at Mayo Clinic and function as trusted clinical partners within the oncology care model. In this role, the NP or PA sees patients at initial consultation in collaboration with an oncologist; independently follows established patients; orders and manages systemic, curative, palliative, and supportive therapies; and guides patients through complex treatment plans. The role includes management of treatment-related toxicities, symptom burden, survivorship needs, disease assessment, clinical trial care, and end-of-life support. The practice offers exposure to rapidly evolving treatment advances, including novel systemic therapies, targeted therapies, immunotherapy-based approaches, clinical trials, and precision oncology strategies used in contemporary breast cancer care.
Because of the complexity and breadth of the patient population, the ideal NP or PA candidate will bring strong clinical judgment, excellent assessment and communication skills, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to caring for patients with challenging and complex oncology needs. Success in this practice requires the ability to balance cancer-directed therapy with symptom management, psychosocial support, shared decision-making, and compassionate longitudinal care.
The NP or PA will work within the focused Breast Oncology Care Team, which includes five collaborative teams composed of physicians, NPs, PAs, RNs, pharmacists, and allied health professionals. The Breast group works closely with colleagues in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care, genetics, pathology, radiology, and other multidisciplinary teams. The NP or PA will have a central role in advancing continuity of care, supporting timely treatment decisions, serving as a key clinical resource for nursing and allied health colleagues, and coordinating care across disciplines to meet the needs of patients receiving complex and often cutting-edge oncology therapies.
Once established clinically in breast oncology, there is an opportunity to cross train into integrative oncology for interested candidates; this will need to be balanced with practice needs.
In addition, the Department of Oncology and breast tumor group are highly supportive of mentoring NPs and PAs in academic, research, quality improvement, and educational pursuits. We are committed to helping Advanced Practice Providers excel as oncology clinicians, collaborative team members, educators, and contributors to innovation in breast cancer care.
