The Opportunity McElhanney is looking for a Geomatics Intern to join our Major Projects team in Calgary starting in May 2027. This opportunity is available as a four-month summer internship for a current student. You’ll gain practical experience supporting large-scale, complex projects while learning from experienced survey and geomatics professionals. Working in both field and office environments, you’ll assist with survey data collection, construction layout, quality checks, data processing, and project documentation. You’ll gain exposure to the technology, coordination, safety standards, and accuracy required to deliver major infrastructure and development projects. This internship is an opportunity to build your technical skills, confidence, and understanding of how geomatics supports major project delivery. You’ll be part of a collaborative team that values safety, learning, and professional development, with meaningful opportunities to connect with mentors and other students across McElhanney. What You’ll Do As part of your internship, you'll gain exposure to a variety of geomatics projects and technologies while working alongside experienced professionals in our Calgary office.
Surveying & Geomatics: Support legal, topographic, control, construction, municipal, transportation, and land development surveys throughout Southern Alberta. Construction Survey & Layout: Assist with project layout, site measurements, as-built surveys, and field data collection supporting infrastructure and development projects. Geomatics Technology & Remote Sensing: Gain hands-on experience using GNSS equipment, total stations, drones, 3D laser scanning, and other advanced surveying technologies. Field Operations: Work in a variety of environments, including urban developments, transportation corridors, and construction sites, while developing practical field skills and safety awareness.
What You’ll Bring
Currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a Diploma or Degree program in Geomatics Engineering, Geomatics Technology, Surveying, or a related discipline. Interest in field-based work. Ability to work outdoors in varying terrain and weather conditions. Periods of working out of town for 1-2 weeks at a time. Strong attention to detail and a commitment to safety. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Valid Class 5 driver's licence or ability to obtain one prior to the start of employment.
What Can We Offer You? The wage range for this position is $22–$28 per hour. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The wage offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
