This is a pivotal opportunity for an experienced engineer to take on a leadership role in shaping the growth of our bridge practice in Alberta, with a clear pathway to career advancement and potential employee ownership. In this role, you will be instrumental in expanding McElhanney’s bridge engineering presence across the province, while collaborating closely with our established team of bridge specialists in British Columbia. Our diverse portfolio features major interchanges, river crossings, and complex bridge rehabilitation projects, many of which have earned industry recognition in both Alberta and BC. Notable projects include the Stoney Trail Bridge Twinning involving bridge construction engineering support for a segmentally launched, balanced, cantilevered 470 m-long bridge over the Bow River.     This role is designated as a safety sensitive position. You’re excited to get in at the ground level of a growing Alberta bridge practice, backed by the strength and stability of an established company. You value the ability to shape your role around your strengths, interests, and long-term goals. You're looking for a clear and supported path to senior leadership and potential employee ownership.  You appreciate the balance of resources of a large organization while enjoying the entrepreneurial spirit and agility of a smaller, dynamic team.

What You’ll Do

Complete inspections, assessments, analyses, structural modeling and design of bridges and other transportation infrastructure such as retaining walls and major sign structures. Collaborate with multi-disciplinary project teams across Alberta and BC. Apply knowledge of Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC), City of Edmonton, and/or City of Calgary standards. Prepare and review structural design calculations for highway bridges, pedestrian bridges, railroad bridges, resource bridges, retaining walls, and bridge-sized culverts. Participate in business development, project pursuits, and proposal preparation on bridge and other transportation infrastructure projects. Prepare conceptual, design, and contract cost estimates. Coordinate with sub-consultants and other various interested parties. Prepare and/or review specifications, special provisions, drawings, contract documents, and other related project deliverables.   Undertake construction contract administration, field inspection, and reporting to monitor the quality and progress of the work being performed. Collaborate with team members to ensure schedules, budgets, and quality control standards are achieved and maintained. Mentor junior engineers and technologists while learning from senior bridge and structural specialists.

What You’ll Bring

Degree in Civil Engineering and/or Structural Engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution plus 6 to 12 years of experience in a similar role. Master’s degree in Structural Engineering is considered an asset. Registration in good standing as a P.Eng. in Alberta and eligible for registration in British Columbia. Knowledge and experience with bridge design related to CSA S6 and its application to bridge projects across highway, rural road, and resource projects. Familiarity with TEC standards (preferred). Strong technical background in bridge design, rehabilitation, assessment, inspection, and/or contract administration. Proficiency in the application of MIDAS, SAP2000, CSiBridge, or comparable structural analysis software related to bridge design work. Experience in bridge hydrotechnical analysis in accordance with TEC guidelines is considered an asset. A collaborative, entrepreneurial mindset with an interest in helping build a team.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
