Overview

Build the Future At McGraw Hill, we create best-in-class, next-generation learning experiences that are used by millions of students and educators worldwide every day. We design intuitive and effective tools that maximize teachers’ time and students’ learning. And we do all of this in a supportive and collaborative environment where we work alongside brilliant colleagues, touch lives around the world, see the difference our hard work makes, and continue on our own paths of lifelong learning.

How can you make an impact?

As a Lead Data Scientist, you will join a team of data scientists, AI researchers, psychometricians, and software developers who provide technical and scientific leadership for some of our most important strategic efforts companywide. You will independently apply advanced DS/AI techniques to solve complex problems that drive business outcomes for our School (PreK–12) business unit, bringing together deep expertise in educational measurement and a thorough understanding of what it takes to operationalize and sustain quantitative models in production. You will develop innovative methodologies and scalable solutions, foster collaboration across teams, facilitate alignment with organizational strategic goals, and provide technical mentorship to enhance team capabilities. You will collaborate closely with colleagues across functions like Product, Engineering, Learning Design, and User Experience to help McGraw Hill create and deliver world-class educational experiences.

This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States.

What You'll Do:

  • Independently apply advanced data science and AI techniques to solve complex problems that drive meaningful business outcomes for the School (PreK–12) business unit
  • Develop innovative methodologies, scalable solutions, and structured frameworks to address ambiguous and complex challenges in K–12 educational contexts
  • Apply acquired professional knowledge to interpret internal business issues and recommend DS/AI solutions and best practices in line with business goals
  • Operate with substantial independence, planning and executing projects with minimal oversight while seeking leadership input for strategic alignment
  • Foster cross-team collaboration across technical and non-technical teams, communicating complex measurement and DS/AI concepts clearly to diverse stakeholders using data-driven storytelling
  • Provide technical mentorship to peers, fostering collaboration and facilitating alignment with organizational goals

What You Bring:

  • Doctoral degree (or equivalent) in Data Science, Psychometrics, Statistics, Quantitative Methods, Applied Math, or a related field
  • 4-7 years of professional experience with a demonstrated ability to deliver impactful DS/AI projects
  • Advanced knowledge in DS/AI with demonstrated industry experience applying these techniques to complex, real-world problems
  • Demonstrated ability to take DS/AI models through their full operational lifecycle, from research and validation into deployed products, including implementation, ongoing monitoring, validation, and periodic recalibration
  • Ability to think through and communicate about system design, scaling, and pipeline architecture to ensure models are implemented faithfully and maintained reliably in production systems, and to collaborate effectively with engineering partners
  • Strong Python skills with experience writing production-quality, scalable code
  • Strong technical communication and collaboration skills, particularly with non-technical stakeholders

Preferred:

  • Commitment to the field of education and the mission of improving K–12 student outcomes
  • Experience working at an assessment company, adaptive learning platform, or edtech company that ships proficiency-based or adaptive/personalization products
  • Familiarity with K–12 assessment ecosystems, including standards alignment, score reporting, adaptive assessment, and personalization
  • Familiarity with ML, NLP, Deep Learning, and/or Generative AI approaches, particularly in educational contexts

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
