Overview

Build the Future

At McGraw Hill, we create best-in-class, next-generation learning platforms that are used by millions of students and educators worldwide every day. We design intuitive and effective tools and experiences that maximize instructors’ time and students’ learning. We do all of this in a supportive and collaborative environment where we work alongside brilliant colleagues, touch lives around the world, see the difference our hard work makes, and continue our paths of lifelong learning.

Your impact on the team:

As a Metadata Specialist, you will bring expertise in learning objectives, competencies, taxonomies/ontologies, and educational metadata that support higher education content and learning services. In this role, you will partner with editorial, product, technical, and data science teams to improve metadata design, implementation, and ongoing use. Bringing strong collaboration skills and metadata expertise, you will help connect educational frameworks to scalable content and learning experience. As part of a growing metadata team, you will help enable innovative learning experiences through high-quality metadata, careful measurement, meaningful analytics, and AI-accelerated tools.

This is a remote position open to applicants within the United States and requires up to 15% travel for the year.

What You’ll Do:

  • Partner with subject matter experts, product managers, and metadata team members to develop and maintain learning ontologies, taxonomies, and controlled vocabularies for higher education.
  • Develop and manage workflows for mapping metadata across diverse content types and disciplines in collaboration with subject matter experts, product managers, and metadata colleagues.
  • Coordinate with technical teams to identify, improve, and scale tools and processes that support metadata management and use.
  • Collaborate with learning scientists and data scientists to identify opportunities for metadata inference, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.
  • Help develop and maintain documentation describing metadata models, standards, and use cases for product and design teams.
  • Use data tools such as spreadsheets, database queries, and programming or scripting languages to analyze complex metadata requirements, explore internal and external metadata use cases, and recommend enhancements.
  • Support metadata quality, consistency, discoverability, and interoperability across content, platforms, and learning experiences.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in education, learning sciences, information science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in education, educational publishing, learning design, metadata, or a related area.
  • At least 2 years of direct experience working with learning objectives, competencies, standards, or related metadata, ideally in personalized or adaptive learning contexts.
  • Experience with higher education content, including digital courseware, e-books, assessments, or related instructional materials.
  • Knowledge of metadata concepts such as taxonomies, ontologies, controlled vocabularies, tagging, and other content classification.
  • Growth mindset and open to change, with a positive attitude and interest in improving over time.
  • Self-motivated and well-organized; able to prioritize tasks and work well under pressure.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with metadata platforms, frameworks, or workflows used in multiple higher education contexts.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and educational content practices.
  • Experience with personalization, recommendation, or adaptive learning tools.
  • Interest in or experience using generative AI tools for metadata enrichment, content workflows, or educational interactions.
  • Experience working with JIRA, Confluence, Teams, and Slack.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
