The posting

Picture Researcher

A well-chosen picture can tell a reader as much as a headline. Monocle is looking for a Picture Researcher with a sharp editorial eye, an instinct for where to find the right image and the judgement to make quick decisions on a news deadline.

At Monocle, we go beyond the headlines to deliver sharp analysis, inspiring ideas and deep reporting with a global perspective. Since launching in London in 2007, Monocle has grown from an independent magazine into an international media brand spanning print, digital, newsletters, a round-the-clock radio station, books, events, shops and cafés.

The role

Working in our Creative team and reporting to the Photography Director, you’ll source and prepare imagery for the Monocle Minute and other newsletters, monocle.com and our radio show pages. You’ll also support the photo desk on the print magazine. Your work will take you from breaking news to stories about design, cities, business and culture, with scope to shape how those stories are told visually.

This is a one-year, fixed-term contract based in Midori House, Marylebone.

What you’ll do

  • Research and select distinctive, accurate images from picture libraries, photographers, archives and other sources.
  • Work with editorial, digital and radio colleagues to deliver images on deadline and find alternatives quickly when a brief changes.
  • Use Adobe Photoshop and Bridge to crop, resize and prepare images for publication. Keep files, credits and source details organised and easy to retrieve.
  • Clear image rights, record usage restrictions and fees, and submit usage declarations for print and digital.
  • Negotiate rates within agreed budgets and work with Finance to code costs and process invoices.
  • Support the photo desk with print image call-ins and other ad hoc production duties as required.

What you’ll bring

  • 1-2 years experience in editorial picture research or sourcing, ideally for a digital publisher, news organisation or magazine.
  • A strong eye for composition and visual storytelling, with the ability to make sound editorial decisions under pressure.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Bridge, including image preparation and asset organisation.
  • A practical understanding of image licensing, copyright, credits and usage restrictions.
  • Excellent attention to detail, clear communication and the ability to juggle several briefs without losing track of deadlines.
  • Curiosity about the subjects Monocle covers, from international affairs to design and culture.

What we offer

  • 23 days of annual leave, plus bank holidays and a Christmas shutdown.
  • Pension, health and life insurance.
  • Breakfast at Midori House and discounts in our shops and cafés.
  • A dog-friendly office in Marylebone, where you’ll work alongside colleagues across print, digital and radio.

The details

This is a full-time, one-year fixed-term contract based at Midori House in Marylebone, London, five days a week. Standard hours are 09.30 to 18.30.

How to apply

Please submit your CV, link to portfolio if you have one, and a short cover letter telling us why you’d like to join Monocle and how your experience has prepared you for the role.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
