Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC) is seeking an experienced and adaptable Advanced Practice Provider Supervisor (APP). This position will provide health services to MPC employees and contractors located at the Detroit Refinery. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong clinical acumen, communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders. This role plays a key part in managing work related injuries and illnesses and promoting total worker wellbeing and fitness for duty.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Promotes Health Services strategic direction in support of total worker health and wellbeing to increase the resilience and reliability of the workforce. Solves complex medical problems associated with worker fitness for duty and safe return to work after absence.
• Manages, mentors, and develops clinic staff. Fosters a culture of trust and confidence with site senior leadership, employees, internal stakeholders, and contractors by demonstrating effective leadership and engagement while delivering quality, service oriented, and cost-effective professional medical services in support of operations. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations for employee and contracted medical services.
• Provides and oversees the medical management of work-related injuries, as well as the response of clinic staff during medical emergencies, ensuring care is appropriate and outcome driven.
• Collaborates on and provides emergency medical care in coordination with the MPC local Emergency Response Team and municipal rescue personnel.
• Augments clinical staffing needs based upon changing clinic demands such as absenteeism and/or work volume. Maintains working knowledge with availability to perform, as needed, all aspects of patient care including illness and injury evaluation, case management, completion of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandated medical surveillance exams, drug and alcohol specimen collections, and blood specimen collections. Coordinates and provides staffing support for projects, outages, and turnarounds (TAR).
• Provides systematic management of worker medical leave in coordination with the Nurse Case Manager, integrating clinical oversight with case management to support safe, timely, and coordinated return-to-work outcomes aligned with organization and regulatory requirements.
• Accountable for team performance, operational execution, and budget. Oversees the clinic’s medical spend through effective financial forecasting, budget management, and monitoring of expenditures. Drives achievement of short- and medium-term goals established by organizational leadership, using data-driven insights to continuously improve service delivery, efficiency, and outcomes.
• Partners cross-functionally with operational leaders, HR, Safety, and DOT Compliance to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) mandated exams.
• Supports onsite Wellness efforts including the organization and preparation for onsite wellness events and being actively involved in the Wellness network.
• Provides care, coordination, and medical consultation in collaboration with MPLX medical team for (non-refining) regional workers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master’s degree in Nursing; or Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies required.
• Position requires active and unencumbered Michigan licensed Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner with national certification relevant to the population you’ll serve.
• 5 of more years of experience in occupational health, urgent care, or emergency room setting; with 3 years of leadership experience.
• Five (5) or more years of relevant experience.
• Three (3) or more years of leadership experience.
• Experience evaluating worker injuries independently, within scope of practice, with an ability to identify and elevate complex medical cases.
• Proven ability to complete, and is a resource to others for, OSHA mandated exams, local case management, and drug and alcohol collections
SKILLS:
• Experience evaluating worker injuries independently, within scope of practice, with an ability to identify and elevate complex medical cases.
• Experience completing OSHA-mandated examinations, local case management, and drug and alcohol collections, including serving as a resource to others.
• Ability to make sound judgments regarding fitness-for-duty and return-to-work evaluations.
• Skilled in managing medical emergencies and collaborating with internal and external response teams.
• Knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and other relevant regulations governing occupational health.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
• Adaptable and comfortable working in a fluid work environment, including after-hours support for projects, outages, and turnarounds.
