Intern – Shipping Market Analyst

Company: Sinochem Oil Shipping (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. Location: Singapore Employment Type: Internship Working Arrangement: Full-time or part time, on-site

About the Role

We are a looking for an intern with a strong interest in shipping markets (mainly tankers), data analysis, and the practical application of artificial intelligence. You will support the team in monitoring global shipping markets and gathering information from industry reports, freight markets, fixture data, vessel position lists, another sources. You will help turn fragmented data into structured market intelligence, identify key trends and market drivers, and produce concise analysis to support commercial and management decisions.

This role sits at the intersection of shipping, market research, and emerging analytical technology. It offers hands-on exposure to real market information and an opportunity to explore how AI can improve research, summarization, monitoring, and recurring analytical workflows.

Mandarin speaking and writing skills are preferred as the role involves frequent communication with colleagues and clients in China

Key Responsibilities

1. Data Management and Market Analysis

  • Clean, categorize, standardize, and cross-check data collected from multiple sources;
  • Assist in maintaining internal databases and trackers covering vessel movements, fixtures, freight rates, and market indicators;
  • Analyze vessel supply, cargo demand, regional tonnage, trade flows, and fixture activity to identify trends, anomalies, and market drivers;
  • Support research projects relating to specific vessel segments, regions, routes, commodities, or market events.

2. Reporting and Insight Generation

  • Assist in preparing daily, weekly, and monthly shipping market reports;
  • Convert large volumes of fragmented information into clear and structured summaries;
  • Prepare concise market briefs, charts, and presentation materials for management, commercial, or chartering teams;

3. AI Applications and Workflow Improvement

  • Use large language models and other AI tools to extract, classify, compare, and summarize information from market reports and news;
  • Help develop prompts, templates, and standardized workflows that improve the speed and consistency of research;
  • Explore the use of AI for processing long-form reports, detecting relevant market events, comparing views across sources, and producing initial report drafts;
  • Support the automation of recurring tasks such as information filing, data updates, report preparation, and market monitoring;
  • Fact-check and review all AI-generated outputs to ensure that figures, sources, and conclusions are accurate.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Business, Economics, Maritime Technology & Management, International Trade, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related discipline.
  • Fluent in Mandarin and English, both written and spoken preferred. Mandarin is required as the role involves regular communication with HQ and clients in China.
  • Strong interest in oil shipping market.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and popular AI tools.
  • Proactive, responsible, and willing to learn.
  • Able to work independently as well as part of a team.
