Job Summary
Manage and operate a maker space by maintaining equipment, guiding users on fabrication tools, ensuring safety compliance, and supporting workshops to enhance user experience and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Manage daily operations including opening and closing of the maker space to ensure smooth workflow
- Supervise users to enforce workshop safety rules and maintain a secure environment
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot 3D printers, CNC machines, and laser cutters to ensure optimal equipment performance
- Guide users on equipment operation, design-for-fabrication principles, materials selection, and file preparation to support project success
- Maintain equipment, tools, and consumables in good working condition through regular checks and servicing
- Keep accurate records of equipment usage, maintenance activities, and any incidents to support operational transparency
- Support workshops, classes, and special projects by providing technical assistance and equipment expertise
- Recommend improvements to equipment, processes, and user experience to enhance maker space functionality and user satisfaction
Required competencies and certifications
- Proficient in operating and troubleshooting 3D printers, CNC machines, and laser cutters
- Knowledgeable in CAD/CAM software such as Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Illustrator, or Cura
- Strong understanding of workshop safety protocols and housekeeping standards
- Effective communication and coaching skills to guide users and support learning
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- 5–10 years of relevant experience in a maker space, fabrication lab, or similar workshop environment
Preferred competencies and qualifications
- Experience working in an educational setting or Institute of Higher Learning (IHL)
- Relevant diploma or degree in engineering, design, or a related field, or equivalent experience
