Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and organized Research Assistant to join the laboratory of Assistant Professor Cheryl Lee within the Department of Microbiology & Immunology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. The laboratory is interested in understanding metabolic regulation of leukocytes and their dysregulation during metabolic diseases.
The successful candidate will contribute to the administrative, operational, procurement, and support research activities of the laboratory. The position is particularly suited to an organized and detail-oriented individual with experience in procurement, financial administration, project coordination, and/or research operations, with an interest in working in an academic research environment.
Appointments will be made on a 1-Year contract basis, with the possibility of extension. The salary package depends on experience and qualification.
Purpose of the post
- Providing administrative and operational support for the laboratory's research programmes and projects, including the end-to-end coordination of procurement, purchasing, and payment processes.
- Managing and tracking financial and procurement activities associated with research grants, including monitoring expenditures, processing payments, maintaining records, and supporting grant claims and financial reporting.
- Coordinating with NUS administrative offices, suppliers, and external vendors to obtain quotations, process purchase orders, monitor deliveries, and resolve procurement-related issues.
- Maintaining accurate procurement, financial, inventory, and project records, ensuring that documentation is complete and up to date.
- Supporting the day-to-day management of the laboratory, including monitoring inventories of laboratory supplies, reagents, and samples, and coordinating the timely procurement of consumables and equipment.
- Assisting with the preparation of laboratory materials and routine operational activities, including preparation of reagents and coordination of autoclaving and other laboratory support services.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate should possess the following:
- A recognized Bachelor's degree, preferably in a relevant scientific, business, administrative, supply-chain, or related discipline.
- 1–2 years of relevant professional experience, particularly in procurement, administration, finance, project coordination, research operations, or an academic/research organization.
- Experience with procurement processes, purchasing, vendor coordination, payment processing, financial tracking, or inventory management will be an advantage.
- Prior experience supporting research administration, grant management, project coordination, agreement or document management, or database management will be an added advantage.
- Experience working in a laboratory or research environment, or an interest in developing practical laboratory skills, would be advantageous.
- Strong organizational and coordination skills, with excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and good overall IT literacy.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with researchers, administrative staff, suppliers, and external partners.
