About the Role

The Additive Technology Industrialisation (ATI) group withinA*STAR SIMTech develops next-generation manufacturing technologies that combineadditive manufacturing, sensing, automation, data analytics and AI to enhance manufacturing productivity, quality, traceability and sustainability.

We are seeking a motivated Research Engineer to developintelligent manufacturing platforms and automation solutions that integrate advanced manufacturing processes with machine vision, sensor systems anddata-driven decision support. This role offers opportunities to work acrossadditive manufacturing, industrial automation, autonomous systems and advanced manufacturing digitalisation.

Key Responsibilities

Manufacturing Systems and Platform Development

  • Design, develop and integrate advanced manufacturing systems incorporating additive manufacturing, automation and intelligent sensing technologies.
  • Develop experimental manufacturing platforms, process-monitoring systems and technology demonstrators for industrial applications.
  • Support the development of next-generation manufacturing capabilities involving metal additive manufacturing, hybrid manufacturing and automated production systems.
  • Translate engineering concepts into functional prototypes, demonstration systems and industrial solutions.

Automation and Controls

  • Develop automation solutions for manufacturing operations such as machine tending, material handling, automated inspection and process monitoring.
  • Integrate sensors, actuators, embedded electronics, controllers and industrial communication systems into manufacturing platforms.
  • Support automation of manufacturing workflows and development of intelligent manufacturing cells.
  • Participate in integration of industrial robots, collaborative robots and autonomous manufacturing systems.

Sensors, Machine Vision and AI

  • Develop machine-vision and sensing solutions for manufacturing process monitoring and quality inspection.
  • Implement data acquisition and sensor-fusion systems for manufacturing equipment and experimental testbeds.
  • Apply AI, machine learning and data analytics techniques for process optimisation, anomaly detection and predictive monitoring.
  • Support development of digital manufacturing and intelligent decision-support systems.

Experimental Research and Technology Development

  • Design and conduct experiments to evaluate manufacturing processes, automation systems and sensing technologies.
  • Analyse experimental and manufacturing data to generate engineering insights and improve system performance.
  • Develop engineering models and simulations to support system design and optimisation.
  • Support publication, intellectual property generation and technology translation activities.

Industry Collaboration

  • Engage industry partners to understand manufacturing challenges and translate requirements into technical solutions.
  • Contribute to collaborative R&D projects with local and international industry partners.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations and project deliverables.
  • Participate in technology demonstration and capability development activities.

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Strong interest in manufacturing technologies, automation and intelligent systems.
  • Experience in one or more of the following:
  • Robotics and automation
  • Machine vision and image processing
  • Embedded systems and electronics integration
  • Machine learning and AI
  • Sensor integration and data acquisition
  • Additive manufacturing
  • Manufacturing systems engineering
  • Programming experience in Python, C/C++, MATLAB or similar languages.
  • Experience with robotics frameworks, control systems, machine vision libraries or industrial automation tools will be advantageous.
  • Familiarity with CAD and engineering simulation tools such as SolidWorks, Abaqus, COMSOL or ANSYS will be advantageous.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Strong hands-on engineering aptitude and willingness to work across software, electronics and mechanical systems.
