Job Description
NUS Immersive Reality Lab is looking for a Research Fellow in human-computer interaction (HCI) to coordinate research delivery across the lab's projects and lead user research and evaluation. The role is based on the project "Immersive Technologies for Heritage Engagement and Preservation" and extends to the lab's other work in areas such as healthcare and aviation. You will keep projects on track, plan and run user studies in the lab and at real-world pilot sites, and turn findings into clear guidance for design and engineering teams and into publications. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team of full-time researchers, engineers and designers, and work with funders, partner organisations and end users. You will also support publications across the lab's research groups, helping teams turn their study results into papers.
Key Responsibilities 1. Research coordination • Coordinate research activity across the lab's projects, tracking milestones, deliverables and resources • Act as the main point of contact between the lab, funders and partner organisations • Plan and run co-design workshops and pilot deployments, and consolidate requirements and feedback into actionable plans • Prepare progress reports and support grant reporting and new proposals • Set up shared processes across projects, such as study protocols, data management and documentation standards • Supervise research assistants and students involved in user studies
2. HCI research and user studies • Lead the design and delivery of user studies, from research questions and study protocols through to recruitment, data collection and analysis • Choose suitable methods for each stage, such as interviews, contextual inquiry, usability testing, controlled experiments and field studies • Prepare ethics (IRB) applications and keep studies compliant with NUS policies and data protection requirements • Manage study operations, including scheduling, participants, equipment set-up and data handling
3. Analysis, evaluation and dissemination • Analyse qualitative and quantitative data using mixed methods, and turn findings into concrete design and engineering recommendations • Develop shared evaluation frameworks and metrics (e.g. usability, presence, engagement, learning) so prototypes can be compared across projects and phases • Lead or co-author academic papers, and contribute to toolkits, demonstrations and research reports
About the NUS Immersive Reality Lab The Immersive Reality Lab at the College of Design and Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS), does research where augmented, virtual and mixed reality (AR/VR/MR), artificial intelligence (AI) and human-computer interaction (HCI) meet. Our work is translational. We partner with industry and public sector organisations in healthcare, aviation and cultural heritage, and take research out of the lab into real-world use. Funding is available for two years. The initial contract is for 12 months and is renewable subject to performance.
Qualifications
Qualifications • PhD in HCI, UX Research, Interactive Media, XR, Computer Science, Design Research or a related field Required experience and skills • Proven ability to coordinate research across several projects, interdisciplinary teams and external partners • Experience managing milestones, deliverables and reporting for grant-funded or industry-funded research • Strong grounding in HCI methods and UX evaluation for interactive systems • Demonstrated experience designing, running and analysing user studies, including preparing ethics applications • Competence in statistical analysis • A record of research output, such as publications at venues like CHI, SIGGRAPH, CSCW, IEEE VR or ISMAR
