Role Purpose
The Technical Project Manager – IT Security is responsible for translating IT Security priorities into well-structured,executable initiatives and driving those initiatives through to measurable outcomes.
The role will manage technically complex IT Security projects and coordinate dependencies across the broader IT Security portfolio. Projects will typically involve multiple teams across Security, Infrastructure, Cloud, Networks, Applications, Corporate IT, regional IT organizations and external vendors.
This is a technically oriented delivery role. Its purpose is to provide the structure, coordination, visibility and execution discipline needed for these initiatives to succeed. The successful candidate must be able to participate effectively in technical discussions, understand architecture and implementation dependencies, challenge incomplete delivery plans and help technical teams convert security requirements into practical implementation activities.
Key Responsibilities
Project Delivery
- Lead technically complex IT Security projects from initiation through implementation, testing, transition and closure.
- Translate security objectives into clear scope, workstreams, milestones, dependencies, responsibilities and acceptance criteria.
- Develop realistic project plans covering technical implementation, integration, migration, testing, cutover and operational readiness.
- Identify delivery gaps, pre-requisites and blockers early, challenge unrealistic assumptions and drive appropriate resolution or escalation.
- Track delivery against agreed milestones and outcomes.
Technical and Portfolio Coordination
- Participate effectively in technical discussions and facilitate working sessions involving architects, engineers, operations teams, vendors and other specialists.
- Understand technical designs, system dependencies, interfaces and data flows sufficiently to coordinate delivery and identify when specialist decisions are required.
- Maintain an integrated view of concurrent IT Security initiatives, including sequencing, dependencies, shared resources, risks and decisions.
- Coordinate cross-project dependencies and resource conflicts with the relevant owners.
Matrix, Stakeholder and Vendor Management
- Drive delivery through influence and coordination across teams without direct line-management authority.
- Establish clear ownership for project delivery, technical implementation, architecture, operational responsibilities and security controls.
- Coordinate vendors and implementation partners against agreed deliverables, dependencies, acceptance criteria and outcomes.
- Facilitate timely decisions and escalate unresolved issues through appropriate channels.
Risk, Reporting and Decision Support
- Maintain visibility of material project risks, issues, assumptions, dependencies and decisions, and drive them towards resolution.
- Translate complex technical issues into concise, decision-oriented management reporting.
- Provide reliable visibility of project and portfolio status, emerging constraints and decisions requiring intervention.
- Maintain proportionate project documentation necessary for effective delivery and accountability.
Operational Transition
- Ensure operational ownership, support processes, monitoring, remediation and escalation arrangements are defined before transition.
- Coordinate testing, acceptance, documentation, knowledge transfer and handover to the appropriate operational teams.
- Ensure project completion reflects the intended security or operational outcome.
Initial Areas of Focus
The role will support projects and initiatives across a broad IT Security portfolio. Initial areas of focus include:
- Disaster recovery, backup recovery and cyber recovery
- Identity and access management
- Cloud and network security
- Data protection and encryption
- Asset discovery and management
The Project Manager is not expected to be asubject-matter expert across all of these areas. The requirement is sufficient technical understanding to manage complex delivery, identify dependencies and engage the appropriate technical specialists and owners.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Experience
- Substantial experience managing technically complex cybersecurity or technology projects in enterprise environments.
- Experience coordinating engineers, architects, operations teams, business stakeholders and vendors within matrixed organizations.
- Demonstrated ability to manage technical dependencies across implementation, testing, transition and operational readiness, and to identify and resolve delivery gaps and blockers.
- Experience in cybersecurity transformation or relevant domains such as infrastructure, cloud, networks, identity, data protection, recovery or other security technology initiatives would be advantageous.
- Relevant tertiary education in technology, engineering, cybersecurity or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Technical & Domain Knowledge
- Sufficient technical fluency to understand enterprise technology and cybersecurity architectures, dependencies, integrations and data flows.
- Able to read technical designs and follow discussions across identity, endpoints, networks, cloud, applications, data and security technologies.
- Understand implementation, migration, testing, cutover and operational-readiness activities.
- Able to identify when specialist technical decisions or expertise are required.
- Understand the distinction between deploying technology and establishing a sustainable security capability.
Project or program-management certifications may be advantageous but are not mandatory.
Relevant security certifications may also be useful where they demonstrate practical domain understanding.
