Job Description

The Technical Manager – Performance Products leads the developers and engineers who turn product roadmaps into technical solutions and sustain the existing product portfolio. The role oversees technical planning, architecture, development, release readiness, and complex issue resolution while building team capability and ensuring products remain reliable, secure, and supportable.

In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to shape technical solutions, grow engineering talent, and bring new Performance Products from concept into operational use. Join a team connecting product innovation with real challenges in the field, where your leadership will influence how products are built, how reliably they perform, and how they evolve to meet operational needs.

Responsibilities

Product Roadmap Translation & Technical Planning

Primary Skills: Requirements Management • Project Management • System Architecture • Task Prioritization

  • Partner with Product Managers to clarify roadmap intent, functional requirements, acceptance criteria, constraints, dependencies, and target outcomes for new and enhanced products.
  • Translate approved product requirements into technical approaches, work breakdowns, estimates, sequencing, staffing plans, and delivery milestones for the technical team.
  • Lead feasibility, architecture, and design reviews; document technical decisions, trade-offs, interfaces, risks, and ownership before development begins.
  • Maintain a balanced delivery plan across new-product commitments, sustaining work, technical debt, security needs, and urgent operational issues.

New Product Engineering & Delivery

Primary Skills: Software Delivery • Software Architecture • Quality Assurance • Product Testing

  • Direct technical execution from design through build, integration, verification, release readiness, and transition to operational support.
  • Ensure development work follows approved engineering procedures, coding and configuration standards, documentation expectations, cybersecurity controls, and quality gates.
  • Review technical deliverables and evidence, remove delivery barriers, and escalate material scope, schedule, quality, or resource risks to accountable stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with Product Management, QA, DevOps, Operations, and other engineering groups to confirm requirements are met and releases are supportable.

Sustaining Engineering & Product Lifecycle Support

Primary Skills: Production Support • Technical Support • Defect Management • Continuous Process Improvement

  • Own the sustaining work portfolio for existing Performance Products, including defects, reliability issues, obsolescence, compatibility changes, technical debt, and field-driven enhancements.
  • Assign and oversee investigation of complex product issues, ensuring containment, root-cause evidence, corrective actions, validation, documentation, and closure are completed.
  • Use product performance, support trends, recurring incidents, customer feedback, and operational data to prioritize lifecycle improvements and prevent recurrence.
  • Establish knowledge-transfer, support-readiness, maintenance, and end-of-life practices that improve long-term product reliability and serviceability.

DevOps Work Management & Release Readiness

Primary Skills: Ticketing Tools • Workflow Management • Software Deployment Process • Source Control Management

  • Review DevOps tickets and engineering work queues for quality, priority, ownership, dependencies, risk, and alignment with approved product priorities.
  • Maintain clear backlog-management and triage routines; resolve priority conflicts with Product Managers and communicate decisions to the technical team.
  • Ensure work items contain testable acceptance criteria, technical context, appropriate documentation, and traceability through completion and release.
  • Monitor development flow, blocked work, aging items, defect escape, release readiness, and agreed delivery measures; initiate corrective action when performance is off plan.

Technical Team Leadership & Capability Development

Primary Skills: Supervisory Skills • Employee Development • Leadership Development • Workforce Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop technical developers and engineers through clear goals, role expectations, regular feedback, development planning, and performance accountability.
  • Allocate team capacity based on business priority, technical complexity, operational risk, and individual capability while maintaining reasonable workload balance.
  • Build technical depth and succession coverage through mentoring, peer review, cross-training, standards, learning plans, and deliberate assignment of growth opportunities.
  • Create a collaborative, inclusive, and accountable team culture that values engineering rigor, customer impact, timely escalation, and continuous learning.

Cross-Functional Governance, Risk & Communication

Primary Skills: Cross-functional Teamwork • Risk Assessment • Communication Strategy • Stakeholder Management

  • Serve as the primary technical management interface for Product Management, Operations, QA, DevOps, Support, Cybersecurity, and other stakeholders supporting Performance Products.
  • Clarify decision rights, technical ownership, handoffs, escalation paths, and readiness criteria across the product lifecycle.
  • Communicate delivery status, technical risk, capacity constraints, defects, dependencies, and recommended trade-offs in a clear and timely manner.
  • Participate in roadmap, architecture, design, sprint, release, reliability, and portfolio reviews and ensure decisions and follow-up actions are documented.

NON-ESSENTIAL (ADDITIONAL) FUNCTIONS

  • Support vendor and third-party technology evaluations, technical due diligence, and integration planning as assigned.
  • Participate in customer, field, lab, or operational reviews to maintain product and user context.
  • Contribute to engineering playbooks, onboarding materials, knowledge bases, metrics, and special improvement initiatives.
  • Support budget inputs, tooling recommendations, contractor coordination, and resource forecasts within assigned authority.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline; equivalent relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • 5–8+ years of progressive experience in software, controls, automation, digital products, systems engineering, product development, or sustaining engineering in an industrial or technology environment.
  • 2+ years of experience leading technical employees, project teams, or cross-functional engineering delivery with accountability for priorities and results.
  • Demonstrated experience translating product requirements into technical plans and managing concurrent new-product and sustaining work.
  • Working knowledge of the software development lifecycle, architecture and design review, DevOps or ticket-based work management, testing, release readiness, and production support.

Preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to lead issue triage, root-cause investigation, corrective action, technical documentation, and stakeholder communication.
  • Experience with drilling performance, industrial automation, controls, remote operations, data products, or other operational technology environments.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary developers or engineers supporting both software and hardware-integrated products.
  • Experience with Agile delivery, CI/CD concepts, source control, automated testing, cybersecurity requirements, and configuration or change management.
  • Experience establishing engineering standards, backlog and release routines, lifecycle metrics, technical debt plans, or product reliability improvements.
  • Relevant project management, Agile, quality, reliability, or engineering leadership training or certification.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
