Job Description
A Research Fellow position is available from Jan 2027 in the laboratory of Associate Professor Shu-Sin Chng (http://www.chemistry.nus.edu.sg/people/academic_staff/ChngShuSin.htm) at the Department of Chemistry, NUS.
Our research program lies at the interface of chemistry and biology, and involves the use of chemical, biochemical, genetic and biophysical approaches to characterize both the chemistry and biology of a given system. Our group is interested in membrane biogenesis, i.e. how a biological membrane is assembled. Membrane lipid bilayers form the basis for life, physically defining cells and organelles, and modulating the chemical environments within these compartments for optimal metabolism and growth. Despite these fundamental roles, however, our understanding of membrane biogenesis has remained rudimentary; we do not know how a cell makes more of itself. Conceptually, the assembly of a membrane involves acquisition of its protein and lipid constituents from another compartment where these molecules are synthesized. For lipids, this entails transport from one membrane to another, usually across an aqueous environment. Our research group is focused on using bacterial outer membranes as models to understand membrane biogenesis. Specifically, we are interested in elucidating the mechanisms of inter-membrane phospholipid and mycolic acid trafficking in Gram-negative bacteria and mycobacteria, respectively.
Requirement
We are recruiting a competent research fellow to join us in our efforts towards characterizing the functions and mechanisms of lipid transport systems in Gram-negative bacteria. The successful candidate will use molecular genetics and/or biochemistry to interrogate specific bacterial lipid transport machinery, and is expected to independently analyze data, develop hypotheses and drive projects.
The position is available for 12 months, with possibility of renewal based on performance. Competitive salary will be offered to candidates who fulfil the requirements for the position.
Interested candidates should direct queries via email to Shu-Sin ([email protected]) and send their applications via NUS Career Portal. Submissions must include a CV, a one-page summary of previous research experiences, and the contact details of three potential references.
Qualifications / Discipline: • PhD in fields related to Chemical Biology, Biochemistry and/or Microbiology. Candidates who very close to completing their PhD, e.g. submitted their dissertations, will be considered.
Skills: • Strong background in bacterial genetics, protein and/or lipid biochemistry; Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
Experience: • Strong experience in bacterial cell envelope biology, including understanding of membrane proteins and lipids.
