Job Description
Research Fellow (Magnetic and Spintronic Materials)
Department of Physics
About the Role Magnetic multilayers are the building blocks of spintronic devices, including emerging memory and computing technologies. Their performance depends on the engineering of interfacial and interlayer properties, the electrical modulation of key magnetic interactions, and their behaviour upon integration into devices. We are seeking a Research Fellow in magnetic and spintronic materials to design, deposit and characterise such multilayers, and to optimise them for use in spintronic devices.
Key Responsibilities
- Design magnetic multilayer materials with tailored interfacial and interlayer properties, and deposit them by magnetron sputtering.
- Characterise the material properties, and their electrical modulation, using spectroscopic, electrical and microscopic techniques, in the laboratory and at synchrotron facilities.
- Optimise material properties for integration into spintronic devices, including 200 mm wafer-scale devices.
- Analyse and interpret the resulting data, and prepare presentations, publications and beamtime proposals, as relevant.
Qualifications
PhD in Physics, Materials Science or Electrical Engineering
Experience:
- with multilayer stack design, sputter deposition, and magnetic, electrical and spectroscopic characterisation.
- with synchrotron-based techniques; beamtime proposal-writing experience is welcome.
- Data analysis and scripting skills (e.g. Python or equivalent).
- Good communication skills and the ability to work in a team, including managing and maintaining instrumentation and tools.
