Job Description

The Director, Software Engineering leads the Legal Engineering delivery pillar within our Legal, Privacy & Compliance Engineering organization. You will lead the engineering team that build, integrate, and operate the technology powering our Legal department including, spanning contract lifecycle management, legal document management, eDiscovery and legal hold, intellectual property management, eBilling, and a growing portfolio of AI agentic workflows.

This is a build-and-lead role: you will own a portfolio that blends enterprise SaaS platforms with bespoke software and lead the engineering of the interoperability layer and differentiated custom applications that make the whole ecosystem greater than its parts.

This role requires both deep technical and leadership with business acumen in the corporate legal space. This leader will own the end-to-end delivery of legal technical solutions that enable capabilities across jurisdictions, partners directly with Product Management, Legal, and Cyber. This role will be responsible for hiring, retaining, and continuously assessing the health and growth of the legal engineering team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engineering Leadership & DeliveryLeads a team of engineering managers, staff software engineers, and architects), plus contractors and interns Own engineering delivery, technical health, reliability, and quality across the legal technology portfolio — SaaS platforms, custom applications, integrations, and data flows Drive engineering excellence: architecture reviews, code quality, CI/CD, automated testing, and operational readiness Steer programs at the right altitude — owning key decisions, pro-active escalations, and delivery health in partnership with our Technical Program Management and Product Management functions Establish and uphold software quality, legal architecture and engineering standards, and NBCU cyber guidelines Drive delivery across multiple complex concurrent programs/projects Partner with Principal architect, scrum lead, product owner, and technical project manager to ensure standards and stakeholder visibility
  • Platform OwnershipProvide technical leadership across contract lifecycle management, legal document management, eBilling, intellectual property management, and eDiscovery/legal hold capabilities Lead the strategy and engineering for interoperability between SaaS platforms and bespoke software — APIs, data integration, workflow orchestration, and shared services Ensure solutions meet enterprise architecture, security, privacy, and data governance standards
  • Stakeholder Engagement & InfluenceServe as the senior technical voice for Legal engineering Communicate program status, risk exposure, and engineering trade-offs to SVPs, VPs and Directors in a clear and business relevant terms Represent the organization in regulatory discussions, 3rd party audits, and external partner engagements as needed Build a deep, strategic partnership with our Product organization — embedded in roadmap conversations, contributing engineering perspective to business process design in way of shift left mindset Engage directly with Legal department and Legal Operations leaders; translate their operational needs into reliable, scalable and secure engineering solutions Partner with our Principal Architect on technical standards fit for purpose design principles and with Cyber on secure integration practices while securing the perimeter protecting the brand, consumer’s rights, and data
  • System Reliability & Performance: Proactively manage reliability and performance of all systems to ensure they meet global business needs. Partner closely with SaaS providers and internal teams to maintain system health and performance.
  • Defect & Enhancement Management: Manage the defect management process from identification to resolution. Manage the delivery of enhancements that improve user experience and system efficiency.
  • Problem & Incident Management: Own the problem management process, conducting root cause analysis to reduce the number of recurring incidents. Focus on implementing minor enhancements or process changes to prevent future issues. Manage the end-to-end response to major incidents impacting Legal business processes. Manage RCA sessions and ensure timely executive – level communications. Reduce “noise” in the system by analyzing ticket trends and automating routine fixes.
  • Support Standards & SLAs: Enforce global support standards and best practices including adherence to SLAs for all support activities. Monitor and report on performance metrics (e.g. MTTR, backlog aging) and use data to drive continuous improvements.
  • Data Integration: Manage the support and maintenance of data integrations between enterprise systems.
  • People LeadershipHire, develop, retain, and coach engineering managers, staff engineers, and architects; build a high-trust, high-accountability team culture Grow your leaders through honest feedback, career development, and intentional coaching

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field or equivalent experience.
  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering with 7+ years in engineering management or senior technical leadership
  • 5+ years of experience leading ML and automation solutions
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with AI including, building or leading agentic workflows and/or agent orchestration
  • Demonstrated deep legal technology experience delivering technology in a large enterprise environment
  • Working knowledge of application security fundamentals - SSO/IAM, API security, secure SDLC, and security review practices when integrating SaaS
  • Strong track record of leading cross-functional programs with legal stakeholders
  • Proven ability to influence and communicate at S/VP levels
  • Experience managing and growing engineering teams (software engineers + managers) in a matrixed Fortune 100 or equivalent environment

Fully Remote: This position has been designated as fully remote, meaning that the position is expected to contribute from a non-NBCUniversal worksite, most commonly an employee’s residence.
