Job Description

We are NBCUniversal's enterprise-wide Standards department. Our team develops and implements content policies that center our viewers and excite our collaborators, including creators, advertisers, and brand partners, to deliver the best experience for all audiences. We support innovative advertising and culture-defining entertainment programs while ensuring that NBCUniversal’s advertising and program content reflects the sensibilities of our company and respects our varied community of fans.

We are looking for an experienced, dynamic Sr. Manager to join our team. You will be a positive, highly professional leader with a thoughtful, proactive nature, strong interpersonal instincts, and the ability to influence others and solve problems collaboratively. You will be responsible for evaluating advertising and programming content, with latitude for initiative, judgment, and action. You will be expected to spot issues, think quickly, and make accurate decisions to maintain the integrity of NBCUniversal and the trust of our audience. As we are a multi-disciplinary team, you will be flexible, pitching in across both advertising and program standards as needed.

This role is based in Los Angeles and reports to the Vice President, Standards. As we are a geographically distributed department with teams in Los Angeles, Miami, and New York, you will be expected to partner effectively and seamlessly with colleagues across the department to achieve common goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of early and mid-career team members in a culture of coaching, learning, feedback, and teamwork, encouraging collaboration, creative thinking, and innovation.
  • Review and guide complex, high-risk advertising and related marketing, including data submitted in support of advertising claims, to ensure compliance with internal and industry standards, laws, and regulatory requirements.
  • Screen, issue notes, and assign TV Parental Guidelines ratings for multiple programming formats and platforms, ensuring standards, corporate, and regulatory compliance, while making sensitive contextual judgements.
  • Exercise expansive knowledge of the advertising and programming ecosystems to conceptualize and lead projects to improve departmental policies and operations.
  • Identify and assess policy gaps, risks, and operational concerns. Recommend mitigation strategies and elevate matters requiring additional reputational, legal, or product review.
  • Provide impactful guidance for emerging ad products, programming formats, and platform features.
  • Develop and communicate standards frameworks through policies, guidance, and training materials.
  • Partner closely and foster excellent relationships with internal teams (including Legal, Programming, Comms, Sales, Product, Engineering, and Operations, etc.) and external stakeholders (including creative executives, advertising agencies, legal counsel) to ensure our department is effective and aligned with company objectives.
  • Operate delay mechanism for live programming, including outside regular working hours, as needed.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS Degree, or equivalent work experience.
  • 6+ years combined experience in standards and practices, and/or relevant work experience in any of following areas: trust and safety, content moderation, television production, advertising, regulatory, policy, or legal within the media and entertainment, technology or other related industries.
  • 2+ years experience managing direct reports required.
  • Must be willing and available to work some evening and weekend hours to meet operational needs.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication (written and oral), interpersonal, and organizational skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Must be a highly collaborative team player with the ability to think strategically and practically, use good judgment, analyze risk, and make quick decisions.
  • Must be able to separate personal beliefs and interests from content review requirements and apply NBCUniversal's policies to applicable content.
  • Must demonstrate respect for all and foster an equitable and inclusive environment.
  • Must possess a demonstrated ability to engage in difficult conversations as our work can require discussion of sensitive subjects appearing in content undergoing review.
  • A passion for television and an understanding of industry trends and developments.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Able to recognize and adapt to rapidly changing business needs and prioritize accordingly.
  • Excellent multi-tasking, negotiation and analytical thinking skills, and demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
