The posting

Newsweek is the global media organization that has earned audience time and trust for more than 90 years. Newsweek reaches 100 million people each month with thought-provoking news, opinion, images, graphics, and video delivered across a dozen print and digital platforms. Headquartered in New York City, Newsweek also publishes international editions in EMEA and Asia.

Newsweek is seeking a Casual Business News Reporter to join our UK-based digital newsroom, producing original, insightful and agenda-setting coverage of companies, industries, markets, entrepreneurship and the broader forces shaping the economy, for a US audience.

The successful candidate will focus on uncovering the stories and perspectives often overlooked by traditional business coverage. They will identify emerging business trends, explain how major developments affect companies, workers, consumers and entrepreneurs, and deliver fresh reporting that goes beyond earnings reports and corporate announcements.

Reporting to the Deputy Publishing Editor, the Casual Business News Reporter will pitch, research and produce a mix of breaking news, exclusive reporting, interviews, analyses and features. They will develop original angles, secure on-the-record commentary from company representatives, industry experts and entrepreneurs, and use data, filings, research and public records to strengthen their reporting.

The reporter will actively monitor business developments across a wide range of sectors, ranging from major corporations and emerging industries to small businesses and start-ups. They will identify opportunities for exclusive and distinctive journalism, helping Newsweek provide readers with a deeper understanding of the business stories that matter most.

They will work with Newsweek’s CMS (WordPress experience a plus), using new tools and technology to create and edit content, as required.

The role requires strong news judgement, excellent sourcing skills and the ability to translate complex business topics into compelling, accessible digital journalism for a broad US audience. The successful candidate will work efficiently to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, fairness and journalistic integrity.

This is a remote casual worker position. Working days and hours are flexible and will be agreed on an ad-hoc basis according to the needs of the bureau and mutual availability. Those based in London will also have the option of working from the London office.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Produce multiple business news stories each day to a high editorial standard.
  • Generate original story ideas that differentiate Newsweek's business coverage from competitors.
  • Cover companies, industries, markets, entrepreneurship and economic trends through original reporting and analysis.
  • Develop exclusive stories by securing expert interviews, obtaining data and documentation, and cultivating source relationships.
  • Report on the challenges, opportunities and innovations shaping small businesses and entrepreneurs across the United States.
  • Monitor corporate developments, industry trends, regulatory changes, earnings announcements, public filings and other business news sources to identify emerging stories.
  • Evaluate and rapidly turn relevant company press releases into accurate news stories, adding independent verification, context and comment, reviewing and editing, as required.
  • Respond quickly to breaking business news while adding meaningful context, analysis and reporting.
  • Use data, research and public records to support and deepen coverage.
  • Collaborate with editors, visuals and audience teams to package stories with graphics, images, video and other multimedia elements.
  • Ensure all reporting is accurate, fair, legally sound and in line with Newsweek's editorial standards.
  • Meet tight deadlines and respond flexibly to the demands of a fast-paced digital newsroom.
  • Perform any other reasonable duties necessary to meet the needs of the business.

Requirements:

  • Experience reporting on business, finance, economics, companies or entrepreneurship in a reputable, fast-paced newsroom.
  • Proven ability to generate original story ideas and produce high-quality digital journalism under deadline pressure.
  • Strong reporting and sourcing skills, including the ability to obtain on-the-record comment from companies, experts and industry stakeholders.
  • Excellent news judgement and the ability to identify meaningful business stories beyond the daily news cycle.
  • Strong understanding of the US business landscape, including major industries, economic trends and emerging sectors.
  • Ability to analyse and explain complex business topics clearly and accurately for a broad audience.
  • Outstanding writing, research and fact-checking skills.
  • Working knowledge of media law, sourcing best practices and ethical journalism.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities in a remote newsroom environment.

Desirable:

  • Track record of exclusive reporting, investigations, scoops or high-impact enterprise journalism.
  • Experience covering small business, entrepreneurship, start-ups or innovation.
  • Familiarity with corporate filings, earnings reports, economic data and public records.
  • Experience using data journalism techniques, spreadsheets and public datasets to support reporting.
  • Proficiency with content management systems, digital publishing tools and audience analytics.
  • Understanding of SEO and audience development strategies.
  • Experience incorporating multimedia elements, including charts, graphics, video and social embeds.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365, Teams and other collaboration tools used in distributed newsrooms.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
