Description
At Northrop Grumman, our employees have incredible opportunities to work on revolutionary systems that impact people's lives around the world today, and for generations to come. Our pioneering and inventive spirit has enabled us to be at the forefront of many technological advancements in our nation's history - from the first flight across the Atlantic Ocean, to stealth bombers, to landing on the moon. We look for people who have bold new ideas, courage and a pioneering spirit to join forces to invent the future, and have fun along the way. Our culture thrives on intellectual curiosity, cognitive diversity and bringing your whole self to work — and we have an insatiable drive to do what others think is impossible. Our employees are not only part of history, they're making history.
Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Northrop Grumman Fellow 1 to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals within our Test and Evaluation Center of Technical Excellence (CoTE) organization. This role can be located in San Diego, CA, Palmdale, CA or Melbourne, FL. The selected candidate will be required to work full-time, on-site at our facility. There is no remote / hybrid / telework available for this position.
This Fellow 1 will serve as the senior technical expert responsible for advancing the discipline of digital model based testing within Test and Evaluation across the complete system life cycle, ensuring mission needs remain central to engineering decisions from concept development through system retirement. This role champions systems thinking, technical rigor, and cross-disciplinary collaboration in a digital ecosystem to enable the successful realization of complex, mission-critical systems.
The Fellow 1 provides technical leadership and independent engineering insight into Northrop’s long range strategic plan which emphasizes industry working together with the government to provide rapid capability development to enable surge response to meet warfighter needs. Crucial to that goal is the ability to optimize existing physical testing, enable a reduction in future physical testing and leverage all available parallel resources. Advanced, high-fidelity modeling and simulation provide a unique, underutilized avenue for shortening overall testing duration while generating increased overall confidence in vehicle performance by accurately managing uncertainties.
Responsibilities will include:
- Modeling and simulation of physics-based systems
- Turning physics-based models into reduced order / surrogate models to enable faster than real time response
- Model verification, validation, and certification
- Deep understanding of numerical optimization and mathematical modeling stability
- Extensive comprehension of testing design of experiments and numerical database point determination techniques
- Generation and execution of physics-based Digital Twins
- Determining how modeling of internal and external discipline components impacts overall performance
- Uncertainty quantification of both model and test data interactions
- Mathematic nonlinear term interactions and consequences on model prediction quality
- Able to define and lead analytical efforts to support trade studies, develop tactics and techniques, and assess performance requirements including combined uncertainty
- Interaction of cost, schedule and risk associated with Digital Twin implementations
- Able to advise program leadership and influence technical direction of programs in alignment with program and sector AOP/LRSP objectives
- Presenting to senior internal and external leadership on overall modeling outputs and strategic importance
- Engage and support the US Department of War T&E community to facilitate engagements and/or partnerships leading to future business capture opportunities
- Support multiple programs, IRAD/CRAD projects, and sector initiatives in a leadership or advisory role including the advancement of new technologies through design, integration, testing, and production
- Develop and maintain the NGAS digital model based testing vision and develop a roadmap for NG integration of internal and supplier technologies
- Participate and occasionally lead IRTs
- Develop and mentor the next generation of engineers in discipline. This includes the development of training material.
- Act as a thought leader for the MBT&E community, working across sectors as required
- Advise multiple levels of management on technical research, applications and long-range business planning
- Advancing NGAS capability to perform live, virtual, and constructive (LVC) testing in support of mission systems validation/verification in a dense threat environment
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelors of Science Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) discipline plus 16 years of experience across numerous test engineering disciplines and life cycle phases OR Masters of Science Degree in a STEM discipline plus 14 years of experience across numerous T&E disciplines and life cycle phases OR PhD in a STEM discipline plus 12 years of experience across numerous test engineering disciplines and life cycle phases.
- Subject matter expert in 3rd generation modeling and simulation architecture for partial test substitution, implementation and analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to execute MBT&E within a modern digital engineering ecosystem, integrating models, data, analyses, and engineering artifacts to support technically sound, lifecycle-informed decision making.
- Experience within the Aerospace Industry as a technical specialist and thought leader with demonstrated leadership, participation in Professional Societies and/or publications in the areas of T&E, Systems Engineer, Mission Engineering, Digital Thread, Digital Engineering, Digital Technology and/or Digital Transformation.
- Demonstrated experience working with customers and senior leadership.
- Must have an active US Government Secret clearance (with a background investigation within the past 6 years or enrolled into Continuous Evaluation).
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance, within a reasonable amount of time as determined by business needs.
- Ability to obtain and maintain US Government Top Secret clearance
