Niko Engineering is looking for an experienced Power Systems Protection Engineer to join our specialist engineering team.

We work with leading electricity-sector clients across New Zealand, delivering protection, secondary systems, fault studies, commissioning support and multidisciplinary power projects. We're particularly interested in Senior and Principal engineers but will also consider Intermediate engineers with strong technical foundations and the desire to grow.

About Niko Engineering

Niko Engineering is a specialist power systems consultancy working across New Zealand's generation, transmission and distribution sectors.

We deliver technically challenging projects for leading electricity industry organisations and pride ourselves on our technical expertise, collaborative culture and high-quality delivery.

Many of our technical staff are shareholders, providing an opportunity to share in the long-term success of the business.

What you'll work on

  • Depending on your experience, your work may include:
  • Developing protection schemes, philosophies, and detailed designs.
  • Protection setting calculations, coordination studies, and technical reviews.
  • Power system modelling, fault investigations, and system studies.
  • Numerical relay configuration and secondary systems design.
  • Site inspections, testing, and commissioning support.
  • Technical reporting, client engagement, and multidisciplinary project delivery.

At Senior or Principal level, the role may also include technical review, project leadership, client engagement, mentoring and the development of new project opportunities.

What you'll bring

  • A tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent relevant industry experience.
  • Experience in power-system protection, settings, and secondary-systems.
  • A sound understanding of power-system behaviour, faults and protection principles.
  • The ability to produce high-quality technical documentation and communicate effectively with clients and project teams.
  • The ability to communicate complex engineering matters clearly with clients, project teams and other technical specialists.
  • A collaborative approach and commitment to technical excellence.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:
  • DIgSILENT PowerFactory or similar modelling software.
  • IEC 61850, DNP3 or SCADA integration.
  • Numerical relay configuration.
  • Protection testing and commissioning.
  • New Zealand utility standards and practices.
  • CPEng, or progress towards registration.

Experience from comparable international electricity systems may also be considered. If your protection background is strong but you are still developing your knowledge of New Zealand requirements, we still encourage you to apply.

Why join Niko?

  • Work alongside some of New Zealand's most experienced power systems specialists.
  • Contribute to a diverse range of generation, transmission and distribution projects
  • A highly collaborative environment where your ideas and expertise are valued.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.

What if my background isn't good enough?

We make the most of the background you have. The CV uses every piece of relevant proof your profile holds, and one of the 25 readers reads your whole profile and flags what the CV left out.
