Job Description

Nokia Technology Standards is responsible for licensing Nokia’s intellectual property, including patents, technologies, and the Nokia brand. Built on decades of innovation and R&D leadership, our technologies are deployed in virtually every connected device used today. Join us and help shape the future of innovation and connectivity.

As a Patent Specialist/Counsel, you will be part of a global team of world-class professionals responsible for creating, developing, and managing Nokia’s industry-leading patent portfolio. You will work closely with Nokia researchers, technical experts, and standards delegates to identify, evaluate, and protect high-value inventions in Wi-Fi and Multimedia Video technologies.

In this role, you will play a key part throughout the patent lifecycle, from invention harvesting and evaluation to patent drafting, prosecution, portfolio development, and claim charting activities that support Nokia’s licensing and monetisation efforts. You will collaborate closely with in-house patent professionals and external counsel to draft and prosecute high-quality patent applications.

You will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge innovations related to next-generation Wi-Fi technologies and multimedia video technology inventions that contribute to industry-leading products and standards deployed around the world. Through close interaction with Nokia’s research, standardisation, and business communities, you will gain unique insight into both technology development and intellectual property monetisation strategies.

Leveraging your technical expertise and access to Nokia’s extensive innovation ecosystem, you will contribute to the continued growth of one of the world’s leading patent portfolios. You will have technical ownership of your patent portfolio within the Wi-Fi or Multimedia domain, with a particular focus on IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) and/or MPEG/JVET video standard inventions deployed in commercial devices and services.

The Patent Specialist/Counsel role is a highly visible and impactful position within Nokia Technology Standards. It offers excellent opportunities for professional growth, international collaboration, and meaningful contributions to Nokia’s intellectual property strategy. Working with colleagues across the globe, you will have the opportunity to expand your expertise, strengthen your professional network, and further enhance your career within a recognized leader in innovation and intellectual property.

Responsibilities

As a Patent Specialist/Counsel within Nokia's Wi-Fi & Multimedia Patenting Team, you will play a key role in protecting and strengthening the company's intellectual property portfolio. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Identifying, evaluating, and managing intellectual property rights (IPR), with a particular focus on invention assessment and portfolio development.
  • Collaborating with in-house patent professionals and external associates to prepare and prosecute high-quality patent applications.
  • Managing patent prosecution activities across multiple jurisdictions worldwide.
  • Preparing and managing claim charts to support licensing, enforcement, and litigation activities.
  • Promoting a culture of innovation by working closely with R&D teams and fellow patent professionals to identify and protect valuable inventions.

Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline relevant to Nokia's business.
  • Strong knowledge of the telecommunications and mobile communication industry.
  • Technical expertise in Wi-Fi and/or Multimedia Video technologies, including relevant industry standards (e.g., IEEE 802.11, Wi-Fi Alliance, MPEG, and JVET), and a strong understanding of their implementation in Nokia and/or third-party products.
  • A solid understanding of the patenting process and/or qualification as a European Patent Attorney or national patent attorney.
  • The ability to work proactively and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and across different business units.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

It would be great if you also have:

  • A strong R&D background, with a proven track record of inventions and patent filings in Wi-Fi and/or Multimedia technologies.
  • Experience with, or knowledge of, applying AI tools across various stages of the patent lifecycle.
  • At least five years of experience in the field of intellectual property or patenting.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
