Ready to kickstart your career in supercomputing? The Computational and Information Systems Laboratory (CISL) is looking for a curious, hands-on student to join our team. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers on experimental supercomputing systems, including GPU-based hardware, and help evaluate the technologies that may shape the next generation of computing for NCAR’s scientific community. This is a learning-by-doing position. You’ll be trusted with real problems, supported by mentors, and expected to dig in, ask good questions, and figure things out.

This 1-year Term Student Assistant III role works alongside senior project staff in the Computational and Information Systems Laboratory (CISL) to support the deployment, maintenance, and optimization of high-performance computing (HPC), storage, networking, and software systems for atmospheric and Earth science research. Depending on the candidate's skill set, core responsibilities include collaborating with High Performance Computing Division (HPCD) staff to support and maintain research and development lab environments, as well as assisting with the installation, administration, benchmarking, and troubleshooting of HPC hardware, operating systems, and specialized software tools. Additional opportunities involve tuning storage and batch schedulers, running analytics, porting NCAR applications to experimental architectures such as GPU environments, and receiving mentorship training to collaborate with and guide junior HPC students and interns.

This is a 1-year term role, and to qualify, the student must be enrolled and maintain "Student Status" for the entire term.

Student Assistants may not work more than 1,000 hours in any 12-month period.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
