ABOUT THE JOB: Tends fabricating machines such as cutoff saws, shears, rolls, brakes, presses, forming machines, spinning machines, and punch, that cut, shape, and bend metal plates, sheets, tubes, and structures by performing the following duties:   ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operates Fab Shop and Machine Shop machinery and equipment. Reads job specifications to determine machine adjustments and material requirements Sets stops or guides to specified length as indicated by scale, rule or template Positions workpiece against stops or aligns layout marks with die or blade Pushes button or depresses pedal to activate machine Observes machine operation to detect workpiece defects or machine malfunction Measures workpiece dimensions to determine accuracy of machine operation Removes burrs, sharp edges, rust, or scale from workpiece Performs minor machine maintenance such as oiling machines, dies, or workpieces Sets up and performs maintenance on fab and machine shop machines and performs burning work Operates any equipment needed to perform job Performs related duties as assigned by supervision Regular, reliable and predictable attendance is necessary in order to perform the essential functions of this position

  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to read and interpret metal rule Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

  EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: 

High School diploma or general education degree (GED); or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  Supervision Received: General Supervision: The incumbent normally receives little instruction on day-to-day work and receives general instructions on new assignments     PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.   Project timelines and work volume / deadlines may often require working outside of standard office hours, weekend, or evening work.   Regular, reliable and predictable attendance is necessary in order to perform the essential functions of this position.       Physical Activity    Over 2/3 of the time

Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, Stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. (This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.)

 

Standing/Sit: Remaining upright in a stationary position, particularly for sustained periods Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; those activities where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly

Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and making fine discriminations in sound. Repetitive Motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers such as operating and cleaning machines Communicating: Expressing or exchanging ideas and information accurately, in written or diagram form Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm to fabricate and operate machinery

     Up to 2/3 of the time:

Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. (This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.) Reaching: Grabbing things from a distance above or from the side Kneeling/Crouching: Position self to pick tools and items off floor, cleaning area Stooping: Positions self to pick items off floor (This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.)

   Less than 1/3 of the time:

Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward downward of outward Walking: Moving about to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion. Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as operating machines and material Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. Lifting: Raising object from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position (this factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles)

   Physical Requirements Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.   Visual Acuity The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles or havey equipment.     Vision Requirements Over 2/3 of the time:

The worker is required to have close vision (Clear vision at 20 inches or less) The worker is required to have the ability to adjust visual focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus

The worker is required to have depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships)

Less than 1/3 of the time:

The worker is required to have color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors) The worker is required to have peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point) The worker is required to have distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)

  Weather Condition Over 2/3 of the time

The worker is subject to noise: There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. The worker is subject to hazards:  Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin:  Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation The worker is subject to vibrations: Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body

  Less than 1/3 of the time:

The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions: No effective protection from weather. The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: activities occur inside and outside The worker is subject to extreme heat: Temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. (Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions such as wind and humidity.) The worker is subject to extreme cold: Temperatures typically below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour. (Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions such as wind and humidity.)

The worker is subject to oils: There is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids The worker frequently is in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small, enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.
