ABOUT THE ROLE
Oath is building AI that transforms the audit industry. We're looking for a senior accounting and audit professional to own the work where clients, audit judgment and AI meet: leading client engagements end to end, standing behind the verification and audit procedures that keep our work defensible, and setting the methodology that engineering and product build into our AI systems.
This isn't a traditional senior or manager role. You won't spend your days reviewing a staff team's workpapers. You'll decide how AI should perform an audit procedure, define what "right" looks like, and prove it with evidence a reviewer, regulator or peer reviewer would accept.
This is an early, senior hire at a startup. Expect wide scope, real ambiguity and direct influence over how the firm and the platform work. We're looking for people who turn hard, unstructured problems into systems others can rely on.
WHAT MAKES THIS ROLE SENIOR
The Senior Accounting Engineer owns outcomes where the Accounting Engineer executes and contributes.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Client leadership
- Own a portfolio of client relationships from onboarding through engagement completion and renewal.
- Lead complex, high-stakes or first-of-kind engagements, and be the escalation point when clients or teammates hit hard methodology questions.
- Explain AI-generated work product to client finance teams and fund managers, and build their confidence in how it was produced.
- Turn patterns across clients into product and process changes, with clear priorities for engineering.
Audit quality & judgment
- Plan engagements: assess risk, set materiality and scope procedures across private funds and SPVs, private companies, employee benefit plans, governments and nonprofits.
- Act as reviewer on verification and audit procedures and AI-generated workpapers; sign off on them before they reach clients or engagement partners.
- Make and document the judgment calls on sufficiency and appropriateness of evidence, so a peer reviewer can follow your reasoning.
- Track AICPA auditing and attestation standards and firm quality management policies, and keep our methodology and AI workflows current with them.
Methodology & AI systems
- Write and maintain the audit methodology, work programs and quality review standards our AI workflows are built on.
- Define accuracy requirements with engineering and product, and design the evals and test cases that prove an AI workflow is reliable.
- Build modules and prototypes using AI and technology tools.
- Decide, with the engagement partner, when a new AI-assisted procedure is ready for client use — and when it isn't.
- Build feedback loops so every engagement improves the system.
Team
- Mentor Accounting Engineers, review their work and raise the team's standard of judgment.
- Help hire, interview and onboard new team members.
- Grow our internal knowledge base so what one person learns, everyone can use.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 6–10+ years of audit or assurance experience, including in-charge or manager-level responsibility for engagements.
- Active CPA license.
- Working knowledge of AICPA auditing standards (AU-C) and risk-based audit methodology.
- A track record of reviewing others' work and owning the final quality of an engagement.
- Experience applying audit expertise outside a traditional audit environment (industry, consulting, audit innovation or product roles).
- Comfort with technology and AI tools, and the ability to explain precisely where an automated output is right or wrong.
- Excellent written communication; you can document a judgment call so a reviewer or regulator can follow it.
- Strong client presence — you can lead a difficult conversation with a CFO or fund manager.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Audit experience in one or more of these industries: private funds, including venture capital, private equity and SPVs (ASC 946, fair value of portfolio investments); private companies; 401(k) and other employee benefit plans (ERISA, AU-C 703, Form 5500); and the public sector, including state and local governments (GASB, Government Auditing Standards, Single Audits under Uniform Guidance) and nonprofits (ASC 958).
- Hands-on experience building or testing AI or automation for audit or analytical work — prompts, evals, scripts or data pipelines.
- Working knowledge of SQL, Python or similar tools for data analytics.
- Experience writing firm methodology, work programs or quality management policies that others adopted.
- Strong, well-reasoned opinions about what traditional audit gets wrong and how to fix it.
- Experience in a startup or other fast-paced, unstructured environment.
COMPENSATION & WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Salary plus equity.
- Fully remote, with flexibility on how and when you work.
- High ownership and direct influence over product, methodology and the future of audit automation — you set the standard the system is held to.
