About Open New York

Open New York (ONY) is a statewide nonprofit fighting for a New York that makes room for every New Yorker. We engage residents from Westchester to Windsor Terrace, building a powerful coalition of advocates for housing affordability. We know that New York's housing crisis is not an accident: restrictive zoning laws block new homes, drive rents to record highs, and push longtime residents out. Renters lose their leverage, and homeowners get stuck. Since 2017, we've organized thousands of members across the state—and been at the center of major policy wins like City of Yes, pro-housing ballot measures, and statewide environmental review reform. We advocate for more housing of every kind, because more homes mean more opportunity for every New Yorker.

About the Role

Open New York is looking for a Development Coordinator to help build the fundraising operation behind our work for more housing across New York. Reporting to the COO, this role keeps ONY's development work organized and on track, managing donor records in Salesforce, tracking grant deadlines and reporting requirements, and supporting individual giving, membership, and institutional fundraising across our 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities. The coordinator will also plan and run donor events that bring supporters closer to our work. This is a great fit for someone early in their career who is highly organized, detail-minded, and wants to build a strong foundation in nonprofit fundraising at a mission-driven organization.

Responsibilities

Development Operations

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date donor and gift records in Salesforce, including entering gifts, updating contact information, and tracking donor interactions
  • Process gifts and send timely acknowledgment letters
  • Track contributions across ONY's 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities, making sure gifts are recorded to the correct entity and follow the rules that apply to each
  • Pull lists, reports, and data on donor trends and campaign results to inform fundraising decisions
  • Build and maintain systems, templates, and trackers that help the development team stay organized

Institutional Giving

  • Maintain a grants calendar that tracks application deadlines, reporting requirements, and renewal dates
  • Support the drafting of grant applications and reports, including gathering program information, data, and attachments from across the organization
  • Research potential foundation and institutional funders and keep prospect information up to date

Individual Giving and Membership

  • Support donor cultivation and stewardship, including drafting donor updates, thank-you notes, and routine correspondence
  • Help manage ONY's membership program, including tracking members, renewals, and member communications
  • Draft fundraising emails and appeals in coordination with the communications team
  • Help prepare briefing materials for donor meetings with senior staff
  • Support year-end giving and other fundraising campaigns

Donor Events

  • Plan and run donor events, including logistics, invitations, RSVPs, and follow-up
  • Track event outcomes and make sure attendee information and follow-up are captured in Salesforce

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • 2 to 4 years of experience in fundraising, development operations, grants, or a related field. Relevant experience from campaigns, organizing, or other mission-driven work counts
  • Experience working in a CRM. Salesforce experience is a strong plus
  • Close attention to detail, especially with donor information, gift records, and deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage several projects and deadlines at once
  • Clear, friendly writing, with the ability to draft donor correspondence and support grant writing
  • Comfort working with spreadsheets and pulling basic reports
  • Some experience planning events is helpful
  • Discretion with confidential donor information
  • Interest in learning how 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) fundraising rules differ. Prior experience with this is helpful but not required.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings for donor events, with schedule flexibility offered in return
  • Commitment to ONY's mission of building more housing and making New York more affordable and welcoming for everyone

Additional Information

This a full time, exempt position, with a salary range of $70,000 - $90,000, depending on the successful candidate’s location and experience. The position is based in New York City and ONY operates as a hybrid team, with three days per week in our office in Lower Manhattan. The deadline for submitting applications to this position is October 23, 2026.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
